1PORT Docsis 2.0 Cable Hwic Review

The review below is based on my dealings with Comcast in July of 2009 when I first purchased the unit.What can I say? It would be a beautiful thing if this HWIC in my 1841 router was supported by Comcast. I could then consolidate the modem, router and switch into a nice 1U rack-mountable device that would fit perfectly into a small network cabinet in the basement.
I made some progress with Comcast. At one point cable-modem0/0/0 was pulling a DHCP address and after getting the device configured via CLI I got a workstation out to Comcast's walled garden. I was unable to get it to activate...I should have called Comcast at that point but I messed around, erased my config, rebuilt the config...spent countless hours on the phone with Comcast trying to get the HFC Mac address of the modem squared away.
Most recently, I was informed by Comcast that the HFC Mac address of the cisco hwic-modem is showing as a LEASED modem in their system...and apparently I am going to be charged for having posession of 2 leased modems at the same time until I resolve it at my local Comcast office.
In any case. Oh sorry, this is supposed to be a Cisco HWIC-Cable-Modem-D-2 review. =) I was actually a little surprised at the lack of end-user documentation for this device. Typically Cisco has a plethora of configuration examples to get a base configuration on any given device. From the limited experience I've had with the HWIC, it appears to function no differently than a typical Ethernet or FastEthernet interface when being addressed from CLI. With DOCSIS, the ISP should be providing some sort of configuration to the device through magic or whatever.
The limited information I found online through forums and discussions have stated that the HWIC-Cable-Modem-D-2 is rock solid, fewer errors than consumer-grade modems, fewer dropouts, more reliable and robust.
I just caution anyone purchasing this item in hopes of using it with Comcast as an ISP. I had no problems getting a technician to enter the HFC Mac address in on their end...but I've had nothing but problems since.

It only lasted a few months before it started crapping out and losing its connection. Sometimes the connection was slower than dial-up even when the modem showed a good connection. I ended up buying a Linksys modem/router combined unit and it worked great.

RCA DOCSIS External Cable Modem (DCM226) Review

(More customer reviews)Quite frankly, this is a horrible piece of hardware. I've had it for about 14 months now and it's given me nothing but headaches. For one thing, it consistently drops the cable signal about once every other week. How do I know this is not a problem with the cable company? My girlfriend has the same ISP, same LAN setup, the only difference is our cable modems (she has the a Zoom 5011 cable modem) and she NEVER drops her signal.
In addition to this, the incredibly poor design of the power dongle that attaches to the modem will cause you headaches to no end. Mine is so sensitive, that even slight movement of my desk will cause the modem to physically reset. This is absurd! I can't even touch the modem without having it reset because the power dongle is so sensitive to disturbances.
On top of all this, it tends to lose the connection when there is heavy traffic. For example, I've had many LAN parties at my house where we've played online games with 4-6 machines. After about 1-2 hours, the connection will simply die and the modem will require a reboot.
It's causing me more headaches now as I am running an in house server that I'm using as the development server for one of my classes. It is consistently dying due to the aforementioned power dongle issue, thus causing problems for the rest of the group memebers who need to access the server to develop on it.
Bottom line, you're better off getting the Zoom 5011 or Toshiba PCX2200. My RCA modem is getting replaced ASAP! I don't know how I put up with it for so long.

Toshiba PCX2500-DAZ8821F-B 43Mbps USB Cable Modem Review

(More customer reviews)I use RCN broadband and this modem is rock solid. It has never locked up on me, and does not require frequent reboots. About once a month or so I'll cycle the power on it just because my cable provider says to do so. But I have absolutely no complaints about the modem itself. I've had it for 2 years, and never had any troubles with it.
The highest speed I've gotten from my connection using this modem is 755kb/5500kb

(More customer reviews)I used to have a cable modem that was provided by my cable company but I didn't want to pay the monthly lease fee anymore so I went out and bought this D-Link Cable Modem. I wasn't sure what all I had to do to get it to work, but when I asked a more computer knowledgable friend he said I just needed to plug it in and it will automatically configure itself.
So that's all I did. I called my cable company and told them I'd be switching modems, they wanted some long number off the back of the modem and said I was all set to go. So I plugged in the coax cable on the modem and plugged in the power. Within the next 10 seconds I was connected tot he Internet again.
Very easy.

What I thought was interesting was the tech from Comcast said this device was completely unusable since the serial number had been registered elsewhere I had to rent a unit from him. After a couple of days, I called the service department and while on the phone he told me all I needed was the MAC address and they would take care of the rest.
Well, needless to say, the unit works great! Was even able to connect my router to and set up my network with no issues. What was Comcast thinking? Well, when I got my bill they overcharged me for the service I signed up for and kept the rent charges on the bill after I returned their modem.
The modem works great and I'm glad I made the purchase!

Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem Review

(More customer reviews)I was renting a modem from Comcast for $4 per month which really was horrible. The modem would crash, reboot, not work, etc... I spoke to some Comcast tech's on Twitter and they recommended I go and buy this modem since it was not yet being distributed by them in my area. Voila, off to Amazon I went.
I purchased the modem, it arrived the next day. I turned everything off....router, computer, etc. The setup was as follows:
A. Plug cable into new modem.
B. Plug ethernet cable from modem to your computer (first time only).
C. Power up modem.
D. Power up computer.
E. For Comcast - Web page comes up that allows you to change your modem.
F. Enter some details....ie. your account number, etc.
G. DONE....shutdown modem, and plug ethernet cable to Router.
H. Enjoy DOCSIS 3.0
I have had this thing for a few weeks now and it works perfectly well on a daily basis. We are actually getting what we pay for...which was not the case with the old junk that comcast provided. We are getting about 60mbps down and 12mbps up...on a good day.
Motorola has an excellent modem again..
