(More customer reviews)I researched competing products from DLink and NetGear online and read numerous reviews. Any of the HD-PLC products should perform similarly in the same situation. Before deciding on a powerline Ethernet product be sure to understand that the quality of your home wiring and the distance the signal must travel all can affect the performance of the product. Poor quality wiring or very long electrical runs may limit performance.
What I liked most about the Panasonic product is that the kit which includes two units is preconfigured, so it works right out of the box without any special configuration. I didn't have to install ANY software to get my network running. I plugged in one unit to my Internet router, and the other unit into a power outlet in a nearby office. Once I connected the Ethernet cable, I was up and running. It was really that easy.
One nice thing with this unit is that you can run a speed test from the unit itself, with the front LED's displaying the estimated network performance. This was handy as I tried different outlet combinations to acheive the best performance. As a side note, I found that plugging the "Master" unit into an outlet as close as possible to the breaker box yeilded the best results. By putting the master as close to the break box as possible (electrica wiring distance) I was able to get a much better signal. I have the master unit in a downtairs room that is about 40' from the breaker box, and the secondary unit in an upstairs office that is about 65' feet from the breaker box.
Note that any powerline Ethernet product is susceptible to interference from other devices. Pay attention to the manual regarding the types of devies that can cause interference, and avoid ever pluggint the device into a surge protector, since that will greatly limit performance.
An additional nice feature of the Panasonic unit compared with DLink and NetGear is that the unit has a power cable. This allows me to plug it into "hidden" outlets, and then place the box in an easy to reach location. Both the NetGear and DLink products are a box that plugs directly into the outlet. This makes them more difficult to access, especially if you want to look at the box to see what it is doing. I like that the Panasonic can sit nicely on the corner of my desk and I can see the lights. I also suspect that the Panasonic will operate cooler since it can be placed in locations where there is air flow all around the unit.
Performance will vary by house and situation. I have a gigabit network switch that connects my machine directly to a server. When I copy a 50 megabyte file to my server using Windows XP, it takes 8 to 9 seconds to copy a 50 megabyte file. Running the same 50 megabyte file copy to a machine on the HD-PLC network connection took about 27 seconds. This seems to be pretty good performance overall. Note that "speed test" is only as good as what is being tested. My test was a real world test under Windows XP copying a 50 megabyte ZIP file.

I prefer it to other computer-based internet services that I have. It has most everything most people want in an internet connection: email, newsgroups and web browsing -- and no hastle with computer software and its constant upgrading (you receive periodic free upgrades automatically over the internet). You do have the added monthly expense of a subscription to the WebTV network that serves as your ISP. You need a standard telephone line connection, it can be an extension on your family line -- you probably won't need a new telephone line. Before you buy verify that WebTV offers a local telephone number for your dial-in use so your connection to WebTV won't be a toll call. 1PORT Docsis 2.0 Cable Hwic Review

The review below is based on my dealings with Comcast in July of 2009 when I first purchased the unit.What can I say? It would be a beautiful thing if this HWIC in my 1841 router was supported by Comcast. I could then consolidate the modem, router and switch into a nice 1U rack-mountable device that would fit perfectly into a small network cabinet in the basement.
I made some progress with Comcast. At one point cable-modem0/0/0 was pulling a DHCP address and after getting the device configured via CLI I got a workstation out to Comcast's walled garden. I was unable to get it to activate...I should have called Comcast at that point but I messed around, erased my config, rebuilt the config...spent countless hours on the phone with Comcast trying to get the HFC Mac address of the modem squared away.
Most recently, I was informed by Comcast that the HFC Mac address of the cisco hwic-modem is showing as a LEASED modem in their system...and apparently I am going to be charged for having posession of 2 leased modems at the same time until I resolve it at my local Comcast office.
In any case. Oh sorry, this is supposed to be a Cisco HWIC-Cable-Modem-D-2 review. =) I was actually a little surprised at the lack of end-user documentation for this device. Typically Cisco has a plethora of configuration examples to get a base configuration on any given device. From the limited experience I've had with the HWIC, it appears to function no differently than a typical Ethernet or FastEthernet interface when being addressed from CLI. With DOCSIS, the ISP should be providing some sort of configuration to the device through magic or whatever.
The limited information I found online through forums and discussions have stated that the HWIC-Cable-Modem-D-2 is rock solid, fewer errors than consumer-grade modems, fewer dropouts, more reliable and robust.
I just caution anyone purchasing this item in hopes of using it with Comcast as an ISP. I had no problems getting a technician to enter the HFC Mac address in on their end...but I've had nothing but problems since.

Netgear RT311 DSL/Cable Internet Gateway Router Review

(More customer reviews)The RT311 is a simple, easy-to-install solution for sharing a broadband Internet connection for small office / home office (SOHO) users. It's about as close to plug and play as you're likely to get.
Most situations can be covered with the Windows-based installation tool. You'll need all the pertinent info from your provider (IP address, gateway address, DNS address, netmask, etc.), but with this in-hand, the graphical installer makes it easy.
More advanced needs, and people who frequently play online multi-user games, will need more expertise to use the RT311. Advanced configurations can only be made by telnetting to the box itself, or by connecting a serial cable and using a terminal program. This won't be an easy task for average users, and while the manual is well-written and thorough, it can't (and doesn't) train newbies on the basics; some level of skill is assumed.
Its "firewall" security is centered around NAT (network address translation), which does afford some level of security for your network. (It's also what makes connection sharing work.) In short, private IP addresses are assigned to PCs on your network, and the RT311 remaps connections to a single public IP address assigned by your provider. In this way, your PC is not directly accessible from the outside world, since by default, unsolicited incoming TCP/IP connections are denied access to the network. That's fine, but for real security, look to a SonicWall or something more advanced. The RT311 won't likely do much for certain types of hacker attacks, like Denial of Service (DoS), "ping of death," IP spoofing, and the like, which some more sophisticated solutions do address.
NAT also causes problems for some applications. For example, IRC will be tough to use, because most IRC servers require IDENT, and IDENT requests won't pass through the device to your desktop. Dialpad.com, Napster uploads to other users, and a variety of other applications will not work in the RT311's default configuration. You'll need to configure "SUA" for this (i.e., port remapping), but again, that requires telnet or a terminal program, and non-technical users will likely find this a challenge (at least at first).
In addition, your port remapping capabilities are limited. You have your choice of remapping everything to a particular machine on the network (not a good idea, and defeats all firewall security, so use it temporarily and sparingly), or mapping selected ports by number. But you can configure a maximum of only six (6) of those, which may not be enough for power users or networks with many users and applications. (The D-Link and Linksys solutions that compete with the RT311 offer just slightly more flexibility here.)
Using a hardware solution like the RT311 is, in my experience, far better and more reliable than software-based solutions like WinProxy. (But of course, WinProxy offers web caching, content filtering, and other features that the RT311 and its competitors do not. But I favor the reliability of a dedicated piece of hardware to loading down my PC with yet another task.)
Otherwise, the unit does as advertised. It's economical, well supported, well warranted, and well built. Its manual, which is supplied electronically, is as good as they come. And most everything you'll need is in the box (including the basic required cables).
One final note: Be aware that this is a real, Ethernet-based solution. You'll need a 10-Base-T or 100-Base-T local area network (LAN), including hubs or switches as needed, and your DSL or cable modem will also need 10-Base-T Ethernet for hook-up. (This box is not really the right choice for sharing dial-up or ISDN connections.)

Motorola 2247-N8 Wireless DSL Modem Review

(More customer reviews)I replaced an older Actiontec modem as I thought it may have been the culprit in some home network problems I was having. I have Qwest DSL as a service provider and upgraded to an Actiontec PK-5000. I also have an apple tv 2g at home. I discovered however through trial and error that the PK-5000 does not support the apple tv as it should. If plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable I was fine but it would not recognize it wirelessly.
I stopped at best buy and picked this up for 98 bucks. The store associates didn't' even recognize it as something they carried. Regardless I brought it home and hooked it up.
1.The installation is not exactly flawless. You need to know your ISP's user name for your modem to access their network. (among other things)
2.The modem won't always recognize that password. If this happens after or during installation, reset the modem by holding down the reset button for 15 sec. + then find it in your browser. The address is not typical and you should look at the little book that comes with it.
3.There is only ONE phone jack in the back so unless you have a splitter you can't have DSL and your phone going through this modem.
4.The menus for configuration could certainly be a nicer interface BUT if you know your way around security protocols and have ½ a brain you should be able to fumble through and make your wireless secure.
5.It recognized apple tv 2g through its wireless connection in short order, I simply had to re-input my security key.
6.Your home laptop may tell you that your security settings don't match the wireless settings of the network. (delete the wireless connection and re-look for wireless connections) Again fumble your way through and you'll get it.
Now I will say that through all of my fumbling around I had it set up and working on my desktop, laptop, Wii, and apple tv 2g in about 40 minutes. It seems to work great, pages seem to load quickly, speed tests are averaging the same as they were before (that being said, the rural community I live in is having serious speed issues with qwest) and there is peace in the valley. It's a bit more spendy than other DSL modems but it does support ADSL2, does allow Ethernet connections (3 not 4 as one is used for your DSL connection) and it is a low profile unit that hides well in your office. The biggest drawbacks I see are the telephone jack and the price you pay for "commercial grade firewall protection" ummmm ok I saw nothing on this modem that was not on my 5 year old modem as far as security goes but it does have plenty of security that YOU MUST ENABLE it is not automatic. (Some people seem to think this is the case...weird)

(More customer reviews)It's hard to find a load balancing router for a smaller business that is simple and easy to integrate into the network, provides security and the necessary backup connectivity that is beneficial to a business without breaking the bank. Recently, we purchased the Duolinks SW24 2PORT Dual Wan Load Balancing Router for less than $140. It was promptly delivered and easy to setup right out of the box. We didn't have to call in a "pro" to integrate the unit into our network. Basically, over 95% of the work our business processes require internet connectivity through portals and websites. We need a solid router that provides security as well as uninterrupted internet connectivity. This router does the job. We're using it with cable and DSL. The unit easily balances our traffic across these connections. During the few months it has been in service, at least one of the connections has had trouble or failed but with the router in place, it was a seamless blip that did not impact our business. The unit "failed over" to the active connection without interrupting the network. The router is easily configured through a browser interface and has many different functions we are still learning and utilizing. It provides a good firewall for security as well as the ability to block inappropriate traffic. We're extremely happy with our choice and look forward to learning more about the router and its capabilities. All this makes it extremely affordable for the home or small to medium business that doesn't need the complicated Cisco routers and the highly paid contractors needed to install and maintain them.

I decided to go ahead with the purchase because I had spent a lot of time researching router/switch combos with print server capability and true SPI firewall capability. There are not a lot of reasonably priced options out there. In summary this unit has performed like a dream. I had two PC's, a NIC laserprinter, and a parallel port printer (via print server) all plugged in, configured with my DSL service, and all up and running in less than 30 minutes. Please note that BEFORE I purchased this unit I made 3 separate "pre-sales" calls to Netgear tech support and received what I considered to be good information in each instance (I even placed a call at 3am one morning to check if they really were 24/7). Read the installation guide from cover to cover BEFORE you actually DO anything and you will probably find (as I did) that this is a no-brainer deal.

Qwest Actiontec M1000 DSL Modem Review

(More customer reviews)Having been an early adopter of DSL a decade ago, I was not too dismayed when the Cisco 675 modem that came with my Qwest (at the time, USWest) service sputtered and eventually failed. I bought this modem--the Actiontec m1000, branded for Qwest and sold as their "Broadband Starter Kit"--as a likely-sounding replacement. The swap was not without incident, which required a visit from a helpful Qwest technician (after a couple of hours on the phone with tech support), but that wasn't the modem's fault: Turns out Qwest had made upgrades since I had originally subscribed, and the new modem was never going to work until they upgraded my account accordingly. They did so, and since then the modem has worked flawlessly. I'd recommend it, though my sole DSL experience is with USWest/Qwest, so I have no way of knowing how it would handle other providers.

(More customer reviews)This seems like a great modem. However, it's too early to tell because it's not an approved by Comcast (my IP). So make sure that when you do look at this (or any other modem) that you check to see if the modem you're interested in is on your IP's list of accepted modems.
