I worked for a small ISP/Telephone Company and this is the modem we installed in every new DSL install we performed. We sold several speeds of DSL over the years from 1.0Mbps to 12Mbps. Once our service hit 3Mbps standard the older modems would die from overheating. These Zoom's never had any issues. Company wide in several thousand installs over three years I had to replace around 6 of these and most of the time the problem was determined to have been a lightening strike. Since leaving the company a couple of years ago, I have used my x6 as a wireless router since all we can get is cable broadband. I disabled the DHCP to allow my cable modem to handle that task and it has worked like a charm and saved me the $50 or so for a stand alone wireless router. Every few months our Wii won't connect and we have to reset the modem. This is most likely a Wii issue since the easiest way to get a new IP assigned to the Wii is to just reset the router. My only issue is now the wireless G technology is outdated by N, but I've never had any issues even with the Wii, a couple of laptops and a Wifi enabled cell phone connected. We even stream Netflix over this thing on a regular basis and never have any issues other than the occasional blip probably on the Netflix side. I'm not sure where all the negative comments come from, but I've had a great experience. To top it off, the last firmware update was in fact October of 2008 and the website is still up.

Siemens SpeedStream 2-Port DSL/Cable Router (SS2602) Review

Siemens SpeedStream 2-Port DSL/Cable Router (SS2602)
Average Reviews:

Bad:
Product comes in a plastic shell - be very very careful that you don't drop this puppy. Came with a CD (useless). Hardcoded default class C mask 255.255.255.0
Good:
Came with a very helpful single page quick start guide. Web browser configuration made this set up really painless and quick. Although package do not state much, this does pack a bunch in a small size.
My Experience:
I updated the firmware from the manufacturer's web. Then selected default security setting to block off unwanted probing. Then I went to port scanning... This ... is STEALTH! Nada! Zilch! It doesn't even respond to SYN-flood! What a firewall! This puppy works as screening router! Configured VPN (if you have static IP this really helps) to office, and what a difference from dial-up! And cloned MAC address on existing proxy server. Woww, this one rocks!
My PCs at home are on Win98SE, 2000, XP, Netware, and SMB on Linux. I wired one port to my switch using uplink port and other one to HP laser printer's MMIO card. All assigned DHCP and DNS from this small box! And I was able to customize DHCP and DNS ranges. Defined web server in the DMZ and enabled honeypot for those crackers out there.
I'd be surprised if someone hacks my Apache box now.

RCA/MSN TV 2 Internet and Media Player Review

RCA/MSN TV 2 Internet and Media Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a computer person, but with some trepidation after reading some of the negative reviews on Amazon, I installed two of the MSNTV2 units over the holidays - one to upgrade my parent's original WebTV and the second for my Mother-in-Law whose visoin is poor. The former is using dial up while the latter is hooked to a cable broadband system. It is important to note that my parents did not use some of the features other reviewers miss from the earlier WebTV products, so for them all their needs are covered. Both `parents' primarily use these systems for email and basic web use, including shopping, music channels and photos. With that background, here are my notes about the units:
Pros:
1.Easy to hook up and easy to use. Nothing fancy or difficult whether upgrading an existing account or establishing a new one. Both units were quickly operational without any glitches (well, see one con below regarding USB).
2.Resolution is far better vs. my parents original WebTV unit, where blue type on a dark blue background on the email screens made reading very difficult. The new higher contrast `dark letters on white background' are much better and the pixel definition is also improved. The resolution improvement is easy to see on some web sites where my parents couldn't read anything before but now the text is legible. Again, this is no match for my laptop, but it is good enough for general use.
3.Related to the above, the new text size +/- buttons make it easy to change the text size on a web page for improved readability. Also, the `resize' button can help with those pages with cramped type. Great features for those with vision problems and they work easily.
4.While the keyboard lacks any TV controls for volume, etc. the keyboard does include ample `one-touch' keys for all the basic email, web and media needs. And neither of the two units had any glitches with the keyboard communications causing dropped letters, etc. that others have cited. One of the units has the keyboard within a foot of the main box, but the other is separated by about 12 feet and worked perfectly unless the signal was blocked by an object.
5.The greater range of file formats that can be viewed is a significant improvement vs. the prior WebTV (not Plus). Electronic greeting cards that were previously unreadable worked perfectly and the ubiquitous pdf files on the web are a great addition. (Almost humorous is the fact that Microsoft's MSNTV2 cannot read Microsoft's .ppt or .pps PowerPoint files! Hmmm . . . I would have really thought a simple PowerPoint reader like those you can download for PCs would have been built in. After all, it would seem in Mr. Softy's best interest to insure that all of their core software could at least be viewed on their own WebTV product, right?)
6.On dial-up the speed is perhaps slightly quicker, but only marginally. In fact, at times it seems to be slower, but that is usually when viewing pages or files that were previously not viewable on the original WebTV. These files, like animated cards and pdf files are often significantly larger than others so they seem slow. On broadband things pop up quite quickly in general, with occasional times when MSN seems to be thinking about it before it sends the page. But once it does, the page pops up quickly. This really shows up when displaying a large .pdf file vs. the dial-up installation.
7.While not perfect, Microsoft's media player does a good job of displaying most videos and playing many, but not all, radio / music stations. Having the media player as a `separate' application is nice since a music station can be playing in the background while surfing the web or reading emails.
Cons:
1.There are still limitations on file sizes and file types (like the PowerPoint noted above) so this is not a solution for someone who wants a `simple computer'. This is a web reader, email client and limited media player that is far easier for non-computer people to use. Not for me personally, but a perfect fit for my parents and mother-in-law.
2.Nice of Microsoft to take the meaning of `Universal' out of their implementation of Universal Serial Bus (USB)!! Okay, so this is not a PC so maybe it is too much to expect it to handle all USB devices, but when I bought a recommended model of USB 802.11 b/g adapter the MSN's site specifically states as being compatible, I would have thought it was! I intentionally avoided any of their recommendations that stated `only version x.x' or some other disclaimer, buying a quality DLink G122 adapter. Plugged it into the MSNTV2 and, voila - a big box stating that the device was not compatible with MSNTV2. I checked it in my laptop just to be sure it was working and, of course, it was. But back into the MSNTV2 and the same `incompatible' box popped up. Fortunately, I could move the cable modem and wireless router to where the MSNTV2 box was so I hardwired it via Ethernet and that worked as it should have. So even if you follow MSN's recommendations on USB adapters or printers, you have the potential that it will not work due to some change in software made by the adapter manufacturer. Be sure you have return privileges on your USB purchases! (FYI, I did try my wireless travel mouse and that worked nicely, including the scroll function that another reviewer said didn't work. Perhaps because mine is a Microsoft mouse?a)
3.No memory expansion? It seems that it would have been relatively easy to allow a plug in of extra memory to allow larger pages to load. I had only one site, featuring lots of photos, not load, but it caused the unit to freeze and a box come up saying to power the unit off and then on to free up the memory. Minor glitch, but plug in memory is relatively cheap - why not allow it.
4.While USB card readers will (theoretically!) work so you can transfer photos, etc. it would have been a lot nicer if Microsoft had built in front loading slots for a few basic memory types like CF and SD.
5.Not sure why Microsoft included the separate remote control. Yes, it works some basic web functions, but it is not a real universal remote (didn't work with my mother-in-law's Panasonic TV and has no VCR or DVD functionality) and the web functions that it has are all easily found on the keyboard. I would gladly give up this remote for memory expansion or a built in card reader.
In summary, after reading some of the `horror' stories that other reviewers have posted I feared that indeed the product was poorly built and worse than prior generations. Maybe the bugs are worked out and the quality of manufacture improved, but having bought and installed two units I have to say that, in general, they work as advertised. Yes, the N-USB (Non-Universal Serial Bus) is a potential headache and the occasional file type or page size problem will crop up, but for their intended uses, both units worked quite well right out of the box. Heck, I have had more problems getting a PC to do what I want at times, so the minor glitches here seem minor in comparison, especially for the targeted user group.
So if you do not need a full PC, only want basic email, internet and media playback, and you understand / accept the limitations of the MSNTV2, this could very well be an excellent solution for you. However, if you need much more functionality, and you are willing to put up with the more complex demands of a PC (software upgrades, security and virus issues, etc.) then a PC of some type is your only solution. (Having spent a couple of very intense days helping a friend clean up mass quantities of viruses and spyware from two of their PCs, I now realize that some PC users probably shouldn't be PC users! Or at least they must have some basic understanding about keeping virus and spyware software updated and active!) I can tell you that both my parents and mother-in-law think this generation of MSNTV2 is perfect for them.

Motorola 2247-N8 Wireless DSL Modem Review

Motorola 2247-N8 Wireless DSL Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I replaced an older Actiontec modem as I thought it may have been the culprit in some home network problems I was having. I have Qwest DSL as a service provider and upgraded to an Actiontec PK-5000. I also have an apple tv 2g at home. I discovered however through trial and error that the PK-5000 does not support the apple tv as it should. If plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable I was fine but it would not recognize it wirelessly.
I stopped at best buy and picked this up for 98 bucks. The store associates didn't' even recognize it as something they carried. Regardless I brought it home and hooked it up.
1.The installation is not exactly flawless. You need to know your ISP's user name for your modem to access their network. (among other things)
2.The modem won't always recognize that password. If this happens after or during installation, reset the modem by holding down the reset button for 15 sec. + then find it in your browser. The address is not typical and you should look at the little book that comes with it.
3.There is only ONE phone jack in the back so unless you have a splitter you can't have DSL and your phone going through this modem.
4.The menus for configuration could certainly be a nicer interface BUT if you know your way around security protocols and have ½ a brain you should be able to fumble through and make your wireless secure.
5.It recognized apple tv 2g through its wireless connection in short order, I simply had to re-input my security key.
6.Your home laptop may tell you that your security settings don't match the wireless settings of the network. (delete the wireless connection and re-look for wireless connections) Again fumble your way through and you'll get it.
Now I will say that through all of my fumbling around I had it set up and working on my desktop, laptop, Wii, and apple tv 2g in about 40 minutes. It seems to work great, pages seem to load quickly, speed tests are averaging the same as they were before (that being said, the rural community I live in is having serious speed issues with qwest) and there is peace in the valley. It's a bit more spendy than other DSL modems but it does support ADSL2, does allow Ethernet connections (3 not 4 as one is used for your DSL connection) and it is a low profile unit that hides well in your office. The biggest drawbacks I see are the telephone jack and the price you pay for "commercial grade firewall protection" ummmm ok I saw nothing on this modem that was not on my 5 year old modem as far as security goes but it does have plenty of security that YOU MUST ENABLE it is not automatic. (Some people seem to think this is the case...weird)
I will update this review if anything changes...Happy Surfing!

Zoom ADSL Bridge Modem 5615 - DSL modem - external - Ethernet - 24 Mbps Review

Zoom ADSL Bridge Modem 5615 - DSL modem - external - Ethernet - 24 Mbps
Average Reviews:

Fast modem. Easy setup. Works well with AT&T/BellSouth. I bought this to replace a dead Moto 2210 received from AT&T (it was the classic Moto 2210, in that it died just a few weeks after the warranty expired). This Zoom is faster than the Moto 2210, and way faster than the old Westell that BellSouth shipped me a few years ago. The Westell was averaging 616 kbs, but this Zoom averages just under 800 kbs on the same line. Zoom is right.
I saw several web posts that said use VPI/VCI of 8/35 for BellSouth/AT&T, so I did, but I am not sure this was necessary. The Zoom instructions suggest setting the VPI/VCI only if you are using a static IP, which I am not. In any case, it works great.
It does not have a built-in router, but that is by design. If you have your own router, this is actually better, because the setup is easier. But you do have to follow the instructions to access the modem from your web browser, because the modem does not support DHCP. Just manually set your ftp to use IP address of 10.0.0.4, and then you can acess the modem at IP 10.0.0.2.

Zoom 5590-00-03 125MBPS ADSL Modem / Wireless Router Review

Zoom 5590-00-03 125MBPS ADSL Modem / Wireless Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my DSL modem died, I went to the store to discover this hardware combo. What an excellent device to include the 4-port WIRELESS switch/router with the DSL modem! Less hardware, less cables, more simplistic. I have a mixed PC/Mac environment and used the PC for setup since the included CD didn't mention anything about Macs. The install assistant was worthless. It actually just shows you photos of which cables go where, then it makes you restart the PC! There is an extensive .pdf manual on the CD, and if you pop the disc into you Mac, you'll find the English version of it in the "Mac" folder. - Along with with a "Glossary" .pdf and a "Support" .pdf. So while I do wish Zoom included good old fashioned paper versions of these, they did do a good job of including all of this on the CD, but you do have to look!
Luckily, Zoom did include a small sheet of paper showing the IP address, user ID & password needed to access the settings through a web browser. I found the setup to be pretty straight forward and the setup menus are laid out well. The menus are completely different from Linksys, but very easy to navigate. When it was all setup and done, my Mac & PC were talking to each other, but I still wasn't connected to the Internet. After calling SBC/ATT I spoke with a rep who admitted they didn't officially support any modems that aren't sold by ATT, but he took a stab at my settings anyway. It turned out that I needed my full SBC email address as the user ID, not just the first portion. The second I saved the settings, I connected to the internet!
I also found the WEP security settings very easy to setup and a nice strong signal emitting from the X6. Once the device is setup, you can virtually forget about it. I can't speak for this devices longevity yet, but it's nice knowing it has a 2-year warranty.
One thing missing on the back of this unit (like many current routers) is an UPLINK jack to daisy chain this into another router if necessary. Being that this is designed for a home/small office environment, it's probably not a big deal for most users who will never need to upgrade beyond 4 ports.
I think networking gear reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. Most of us (myself included) are NOT network professionals. Networking computers is considered by many, to be the hardest thing to do in I-T. Since it is a complicated scenario, many people I believe make the mistake of blaming the hardware, when many times, they have incorrect settings or software issues causing them to pull their hair out. Overall, I think networking companies are doing an excellent job making equipment that can now be installed by the average Joe. 10 or 15 years ago, that was unheard of.

Actiontec GT704WG 54Mbps Wireless-G DSL Gateway Modem Review

Actiontec GT704WG 54Mbps Wireless-G DSL Gateway Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this when getting Qwest DSL. The only problem I've had (so far) was on Qwest's side, where my phone wasn't wired for DSL when they said it would be. A (free) service call by a tech. fixed that very quickly.
As far as the modem itself goes, everything works. I've tested the ethernet ports and they get approx 100mbs. I also enabled the wireless part and got a 4-bar signal on my laptop three rooms away. Wireless was about 11mbs. The documentation was a little thin on how to set it up, but the Qwest hotline walked me through it. The modem also included a short sheet for configuring wireless.
UPDATE: I had been using VPN with my dialup service. When I got DSL, VPN would no longer work. The users guide said to contact Qwest to enable VPN pass-through, but they were not helpful. They suggested contacting Actiontec, where it was suggested I contact a group that charges per call. I decided to poke around somemore, and discovered that turning the modem Firewall Security setting from "low" to "off", VPN would start working. You'd think that somebody would have known about that...
UPDATE: This modem usually works fine for weeks at a time, but once in a while it loses its internet connection. This prompts a troubleshooting wizard to pop up. In my experience the wizard doesn't usually fix anything, and sometimes makes things worse. The best thing I've found is to turn the modem off, wait 10-20 seconds, and turn it on again. This reboot usually gets the "internet" light on the modem to turn green in about 30 seconds. I think the problem is on the Qwest side of things.
UPDATE: The problem of dropping the internet connection seemed to be happening more frequently. The modem firmware was W04; I found version W06 on the Qwest website and decided to upgrade to see if that would help. This was a mistake, as the upgrade process hung & rendered the modem useless. DOH! I now have a new modem, and will see if that helps.

Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router Review

Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've replaced my Linksys BEFW11S4 router with Netgear MR814, and I have not been disappointed. MR814 has a better range, better user interface, and several features missing from the Linksys model.
Setup was very easy - Netgear setup wizard even recognized the type of the broadband connection I have (PPPoE-based DSL). The manual includes a handy table with settings for many US ISPs. Wireless LAN was also up and running in no time.
I have no complains about the router operation so far. It's does not drop my PPPoE connection, and is generally *not noticeable* - just like a router should be.
Features that make this router stand out in the crowded field of wireless routers: 24x7 tech support and 3yr. warranty, parental controls plus free Zero Knowledge Freedom Personal Firewall software (one-year license for up to 8 computers), and ability to update your dynamic ip address in DynDNS.org database automatically (very handy if you need to connect to your home computer).
The only downside I can think of is the size. The unit is larger than many comparable routers, although it is not as tall as others, and can be positioned vertically with the included stand, or mounted on the wall.

Actiontec GT701 High Speed DSL Modem Review

Actiontec GT701 High Speed DSL Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I signed up for DSL, my vendor (AT&T) shipped me a free DSL modem. While the provided modem worked most of the time with a computer, it did not reliably run with a router attached. I reconfigured it for a bridged mode and that seemed to improve. However it was still slow, slow to connect as it did not seem to keep connected. The documentation was very dated, with nothing updated on the Internet. The support for that modem really didn't exist from the vendor either. However when I purchased the Actiontec modem after reading the reviews, I was hopeful that it would solve my DSL reliability concerns. When it arrived, I simply followed the instructions which really consisted of plugging it up and turning it on. It self sensed my AT&T vendor by configuring the DSL network settings and began to work. I did nothing. It just worked and is still working. Much faster than the old modem too. I have to say that this new modem looks a bit cheap and flimsy, but it is not and it works beautifully.

Qwest Actiontec M1000 DSL Modem Review

Qwest Actiontec M1000 DSL Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having been an early adopter of DSL a decade ago, I was not too dismayed when the Cisco 675 modem that came with my Qwest (at the time, USWest) service sputtered and eventually failed. I bought this modem--the Actiontec m1000, branded for Qwest and sold as their "Broadband Starter Kit"--as a likely-sounding replacement. The swap was not without incident, which required a visit from a helpful Qwest technician (after a couple of hours on the phone with tech support), but that wasn't the modem's fault: Turns out Qwest had made upgrades since I had originally subscribed, and the new modem was never going to work until they upgraded my account accordingly. They did so, and since then the modem has worked flawlessly. I'd recommend it, though my sole DSL experience is with USWest/Qwest, so I have no way of knowing how it would handle other providers.

D-Link DSL-2320B ADSL2+ DSL Modem (Factory Refurbished) Review

D-Link DSL-2320B ADSL2+ DSL Modem (Factory Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this modem after reading a review that called it "the fastest DSL modem" available. When attached to AT&T DSL, I had a 32kb/sec connection at best. I called AT&T, had a tech come out, and my connection was great (.8Mb/sec). I switched to an out-dated DSL modem from another company and have a .6Mb/sec connection. Switched back to this one, and still slower then a turtle. All the settings were verified by the AT&T tech, so it was not a problem with my setup. This modem is currently a paper weight in my office. If you want to buy one, don't.

Motorola Southeast Region DSL Modem Review

I am on my 3rd Motorola modem in less than 2.5 years. I can only use this one with AT&T DSL line. Each one of them broke right after 1 year warranty expired, and they are not cheap. As dependent as I am on Internet connection, I am seriously thinking about switching to another provider, since I can't afford paying for a replacement at any cost when another modem dies instantly without warning signs. Last time I had to pay $80 in store which is outrageous. I had cable modems before and they all became obsolete while still in good physical health, lasting me for 3-4 years each.

Actiontec GT724WGR Universally Compatible 4-port ADSL Wireless Gateway (Gray) Review

Good thing for Rick V's review below. Otherwise I would have returned this great router.
If you are a Verizon DSL customer, it is possible that you can't connect immediately to the Verizon DSL service due to the WAN IP Lease expiration issue Rick described below. However, after disconnecting the old Westell modem and waiting for a few hours, the lease on the WAN IP had expired and the Verizon server had issued a new WAN IP to the new router. From that point on the auto-configuration worked like a charm. My advice:
1) don't call Verizon customer service - they are clueless about this issue
2) don't call Actiontec customer service - they told me that the router just does not work with Verizon
3) disconnect your old modem the night before your new Actiontec shows up. That way you are ready to go immediately.
Also, Rick V mentioned below that the router does not support WEP incryption, but only WAP incryption. That is actually not correct since the "Advanced Wireless Set-up Option" allows you to select what type of incryption you want.
Now that that's out of the way I can summarize as follows:
- Set up is really easy and fast (even for Verizon customers, if you follow my advice)
- Range is great. My router is located on the first floor and I still have 54 speed on the second floor in the opposite corner of the house
- documentation is good
- configuration is very intuitive
- just with any other g routers, you can get interference from 2.4 GHZ cordless phones. I would position router and receivers away from a phone basestation
- I was able to reclaim some space on my desk due to the integrated nature (modem and router) of this product
- the already great antenna can be replaced with one of your liking, if you feel inclined to do so (it is screwed on)
- the router is a little bigger than many other routers, but standing up it does not really matter
- it was easy to get to a life customer service person. However, they also did not know about the Verizon WAN IP lease issue
Hence, I can highly recommended this modem/router.

Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router (DGND3700) Review

This could be the best DSL modem/router hands down, but it's not. The issue is maintaining an Internet connection. A slight variation in signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio drops the Internet connection even though the DSL sync is solid. The part that will drive you mad is the router must be rebooted to regain Internet. This began the first day I installed it, May 30, 2011. The longest the DGND3700 maintained connection was 38 hours.
Netgear support never acknowledged the problem, blaming AT&T - an easy target and somewhat deserving for line quality. Frustrated, I reinstalled the AT&T modem with no drops for several days. When I reconnected the DGND3700, all was well...for a few hours. I complained to Netgear and changed a lot of settings to no avail. Feeling alone in my conundrum, I looked to Netgear forum for support which became a support group. This problem is global and not specific to one ISP.
Today is July 10, 2011 and I give up. No longer will I continue to wait for a firmware update that may fix the gaffe nor will I tolerate more rabbit holes. I will buy a cheap DSL modem and the Apple AirPort Extreme. The Actiontec GT701D is highly rated, universal, and proven. A solid Internet connection and fast Ethernet is all I wanted from the DGND3700, but it was not to be.
