AT&T Quicksilver USB Connect Card (AT&T) Review

ATandT Quicksilver USB Connect Card (ATandT)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just got a new Apple Macbook Air version 2, and wanted to be really really flexible when traveling, so I added this new USB 3G card to the mix. The card is only a few weeks old at this time, and so the Mac drivers have to be downloaded directly from the manufacturer's website, as AT&T only includes the Windows drivers in the package. I can understand in the rush to get the card out they probably focused on the more widely used windows drivers, and I had no problem downloading the latest mac driver and instruction sheet from the manufacturer's website.
I did run into 2 stumbling blocks. First this thing is bigger in real life than the picture would make it seem. I thought it would be more like my small USB memory cards in size, and so when I saw it for the 1st time at the AT&T store I was a little surprised how big it is. In fact it's too bulky to fit into my Macbook Air's USB Port - there is just not enough clearance, so I had to buy a USB extension cable, which actually kind of worked out ok because I can put it nearer the window and away from the computer for better 3G reception.
The other stumbling block was a misleading direction in the otherwise very clear installation manual to leave the "APN" field blank on the Mac software. I wasn't able to connect even though everything looked good to me and the AT&T tech on the phone until he asked what the APN was set to. Turns out for AT&T, they use "isp.cingular" in all lower case with no user-name or password as the APN for all the data connect cards. Once I set that up I was working fine, with very decent 3G speeds.
So it seems to work fine so far after a few days of use now, and I finally have that go anywhere laptop experience I was always wishing for.

Keep your laptop connected to the Internet wherever you roam with the AT&T USBConnect Quicksilver 3G modem, one of the smallest USB modems available and offering support for tri-band 3G connectivity--perfect for global roaming (additional charges applicable). The Quicksilver's four-click swivel mechanism is designed to work across different USB port layouts and to protect the USB connector when not in use, and there's no protective cap to lose.
The AT&T USBConnect Quicksilver is the first USB mobile broadband device to use the Icera Livanto chipset, providing the latest features in one of the world's smallest HSPA USB devices that weighs just 1.2 ounces. Based on the global standard for wireless--GSM--the Quicksilver provides access to not only the nation's fastest 3G network but also to international data roaming in more than 150 countries, with 3G available in more than 60 of those countries.
It seamlessly works between AT&T's 3G BroadbandConnect and EDGE networks, and it offers USB plug-and-play operability with automatic installation of AT&T Communication Manager software. It also features a multicolor LED status indicator built-in swivel.
AT&T Service This AT&T USB 3G modem requires an AT&T DataConnect plan. It can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's 3G mobile broadband data network, which is available in most major metropolitan areas. The AT&T 3G network uses the dual-band UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900 MHz network, and this USB modem is also compatible with 2100 MHz 3G networks (found in international territories). The AT&T 3G network provides download speeds ranging from 700 Kbps to 1.7 Mbps, and upload speeds ranging from 500 Kbps to 1.2 Mbps. This makes it possible to enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless multimedia services, and it gives you the advantage of offering simultaneous voice and data services.
In areas where the 3G network is not available, you'll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. Providing average data download speeds between 70-135Kbps, it's fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services, including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go.

Sierra Wireless AT&T USBConnect Mercury USB Modem BLADE ANTENNA - OEM SMK TS-9 Review

Sierra Wireless ATandT USBConnect Mercury USB Modem BLADE ANTENNA - OEM SMK TS-9
Average Reviews:

The product works as described and had a visible increase in performance both in open areas where I already had "good" reception (went to excellent) and in a poor reception situation where my signal strength was boosted from basically none to 10-20%. The plug for it seems to be a bit loose, but that might just be my wireless device. The Velcro attachment for the antenna works well and is pretty convenient too. Decent cable length for getting this up into the air when necessary as well.

I got this antenna for my T-Mobile laptop connect card which has a small port for antennas. Unfortunately when the antenna arrived it did not fit the port as it was supposed to according to the website.
Fortunately for me I was able to modify my data card antenna hole to fit without damaging the card. Once it was in it worked like a charm. I had a very clear boost in signal(don't confuse that with speed).
To clarify a little, I work on the 24th floor of a building and could barely hold on to an Edge connection which is very slow(speed). Once I plugged in the antenna I was able to get a fairly consistent 1-2 bars of 3G. This did change my speed but only because I was able to pick up the higher frequency(3G) which is faster than Edge. Antenna's themselves do not boost signal speed, they boost signal strength. In other words, the 3G signal was to weak to pick up before and the antenna gave me the boost I needed to receive it. I had to clarify because to many people mistake that about antennas.
Eventually, I purchased another larger antenna from this company directly from their website. It was a military grade antenna and holds on to the signal better and now its much more stable.
In any event, these products are great. I also, noticed that the newer antenna had a proper size component for my port.

Samsung SGH-A197 Charging USB 2.0 Data Cable This professional grade custom cable outperforms the original Review

Samsung SGH-A197 Charging USB 2.0 Data Cable This professional grade custom cable outperforms the original
Average Reviews:

As far as I know, the cable might work just fine. However, the SGH-A197 phone doesn't appear to have the functionality to connect to a PC (natively in Windows or using the Samsung PC Studio software.) Thus this cable isn't worth anything. If anyone does know of a way to connect the phone, please let me know!

D-Link DSL-2320B ADSL2+ DSL Modem (Factory Refurbished) Review

D-Link DSL-2320B ADSL2+ DSL Modem (Factory Refurbished)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this modem after reading a review that called it "the fastest DSL modem" available. When attached to AT&T DSL, I had a 32kb/sec connection at best. I called AT&T, had a tech come out, and my connection was great (.8Mb/sec). I switched to an out-dated DSL modem from another company and have a .6Mb/sec connection. Switched back to this one, and still slower then a turtle. All the settings were verified by the AT&T tech, so it was not a problem with my setup. This modem is currently a paper weight in my office. If you want to buy one, don't.

Actiontec GT701D Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities Review

Actiontec GT701D Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this unit to replace a Motorola 2210 that after 13 months died of heat exhaustion. The 2210 ran HOT HOT HOT. I was told by an ATT Tech that the unit might last a year, and of course 13 months out, one month after the warranty expired the 2210 died. My replacement setup tied this Actiontec unit to a D-Link DIR 655 Extreme N Wireless Router. When I attempted an automatic setup, it turned out that both the Actiontec and the D-Link Wireless Router shared an IDENTICAL IP Network Address at 168.192.0.1. This is not a good thing. However after a quick call to Actiontec Customer Support on a Friday Night (I really do have a life:) along with a brief description of the conflict issue, I was able (using advance settings) to modify the Network IP Address on the Actiontec unit, resolve the conflict and get the unit up and running. This unit is virtually identical to the Motorola 2210 in terms of connections and for anyone replacing a burned out 2210 Motorola (piece of junk) this is the unit for you. The unit is about the same size and runs noticeably cooler than the 2210. From other reviews of this and a related Actiontec unit it appears and so far I can confirm that this Actiontec unit is very effective in holding and processing the DSL signal. The slightly more expensive Actiontec USB & Ethernet DSL Modem has an on off switch a USB port and can handle two computers on a wired network basis without an additional network adapter, but is also an older unit that must be upgraded to ADSL 2/2+, whereas this GT701D unit has ADSL 2/2+ protocol built in. This is a great unit for the money if you require a simple stand alone DSL modem.
