Hawking Hi-Speed 54M Wireless G Router (HWR54G) Review

Hawking Hi-Speed 54M Wireless G Router (HWR54G)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this one as a replacement for a wireless D-Link DI-784 router that was glitchy and could not be programmed at all. And this was quite a change! While this router is not too sophisticated in terms of either available wireless security protocols or some other features, it has everything one needs to create a home network, and more.
Namely, compared to similar wireless routers from better known brands (DLink, NetGear, Linksys) this one:
1. Is PROGRAMMABLE. That is, it does not stop working or deos not develop glitshes when you change modes and parameters. (Many others present you with a whole spectrum of glitches when you start changing default settings.)
2. Supports any Internet connections, not only cable/DLS. You CAN use it with a leased line, you CAN connect it to another router with a static address, etc.
3. You CAN assign it a static IP address, and it works. (MOST others don't.)
4. It does support opening additional ports for your special applications (such as IP telephony - see below), and it works. (Many others don't do it properly.)
5. You can switch the DHCP feature off, and the router still works. (Many others don't.)
6. VPN pass-through works, and one can really connect to your work networks from home without glitches.
SUMMARY: I have successfully set the router up so that it currently supports 3 wired computers, 1 wireless, and a Vonage IP phone router. I couldn't do it with other routers from manufacturers mentioned above, because all of them were glitchy and actually could not work with static IP addresses and/or other routers and/or DHCP off, etc.
All wireless features work fine, and the speed/range are acceptable. One can use a long WEP key (26 Hexadecimal characters), and communication is fast and stable.
For those who are interested in configuring IP telephony: Vonage offers great phone plans, but it currently sends you a regular Linksys router of of its own with 3 RJ45 ports and 2 phone ports. So IF you have more than 3 computers and/or computers using wireless, you need to set up TWO routers to work together. And I succeeded in doing this with the Hawking one. Namely, I have connected the Hawking HWR54G to the cable modem, and it is the "primary" router with DHCP enabled. All 3 wired computers are connected to it as well as the wireless laptop.
The "secondary" Vonage router is connected to the primary one using a STATIC IP address (outside of the range used by DHCP). That way you can guarantee that it will always have the same address irrespective of the number of reboots. This configuration makes it possible to MAKE calls, but not receive them, because the system (primary router) doesn't know where to send incoming call data packets, and also blocks some of the ports by default (firewall function).
So I opened the IP telephony ports on the Hawking router and set up re-routing of these data packets to the Vonage Linksys router at its static IP address. Also, I had to open port ranges used by Vonage by adding these to the list of custom applications. Ports to be opened on the router/firewall:
69-69 (Vonage 1)
5060-5063 (Vonage 2)
10000-20000 (Vonage 3)
All three apps should be checked.
That way the phone works both ways, i.e. you can receive calls as well!
On the negative side, the only thing that I noticed was as follows: from time to time (once a day if you work intensively for the whole day) the router can "hang", and wireless networking stops working. As soon as you unplug it and then plug it in again, it reboots, and everything works fine. Nothing else is needed (no computer reboots). Generally speaking, this is quite a good result compared to some other models, and I can live with it. Recommended.

Wilson Electronics 801247 Desktop (DT) Cell Phone Signal Booster for Home or Office - For Multiple Users Review

Wilson Electronics 801247 Desktop (DT) Cell Phone Signal Booster for Home or Office - For Multiple Users
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No matter whose providing our cell phone service, dead zones still seem to be an issue. The overpriced and underachieving booster that my service provider billed us for was absolutely worthless. In short, after four days use I boxed it up and sent it back for an account credit. When the opportunity came along to take the Wilson Electronics 801247 Cell Phone Signal Booster for a test drive I had some serious doubts.
Opening the box, the first thing I noticed was the hard plastic body casing for both the exterior antenna and the amplifier. Speaking from personal experience I know that the exterior antenna unit will have a short lifespan against the elements unless it is weather proofed. Corrosion will definitely have an effect on the connectors. Vulcanizing tape, electrical tape and Scotch coat is a must if this product is installed outdoors. My other gripe is the design of the cradle. Its a given that the cradle will accumulate standing water which could result in damage to the unit.
That said, I did a quick inventory of hardware that included the DT amplifier, amplifier antenna, exterior antenna, mounting hardware, barrel connector, ac power supply, and both 20' and 30' coaxial cables. Kudos to the folks at Wilson for providing a detailed and readable instruction manual. Tools that will come in handy if mounting outdoors including the protection that I mentioned earlier are a drill, 3/16" bit, phillips head screwdriver and an adjustable wrench. After determining the location of the strongest signal, I opted to mount the exterior antenna inside on a facing window.
Just a reminder to mount the front of the antenna so that it faces outside (which is the logo side) and not in the direction of the amplifier. To keep the system from oscillating and shutting down, I placed the amplifier about 20 feet away from the antenna. Always point the onboard antenna backwards towards the exterior antenna. The flashing of the red light means the gear is too close to each other and the unit will shut down. The green light means all systems are go. Luckily we got this model up and running after only two tries.
Now the important test. In the same space and about 10 feet away from the amplifier I opened my cell phone and got a surprise. Instead of getting the customary one bar for this location, I had the full compliment. That has never happened here. Conversations were crisp and clear. Instead of turning up my volume to hear the other party, I had to lower the volume on my phone. That is a first. To further test this system, I left the office, closed the door and walked down the hall to the soda machine which is about an additional 30 feet away. Even though I lost a couple of bars, my reception was still clear.
It goes without saying that this product is far superior then the overpriced piece of junk that my cell phone provider shipped out to me. The Utah based manufacturer backs this system with a one year warranty and also a 30 day money back guarantee. The company website is somewhat basic but offers great links to various product operating manuals, tech support and a toll free customer service number.
In closing, my only disappointment remains with the overall design of the exterior antenna and cradle. Still this booster delivers on a great signal. With proper installation (weatherizing) this Wilson Electronics product may just be the right choice for those of us that can't hear you now.

Designed to give the best results when used in a single room, the Wilson Electronics Desktop (DT) Cell Phone Signal Booster increases your cell phone's signal by more than 15 times. It significantly improves your cell phone's overall performance by minimizing dropped calls, increasing data rates, and letting you enjoy clearer reception, making the Wilson DT the ideal solution in an office or at home.
Multiple mounting options ensure you'll get the best possible signal. View larger. It's All About PowerThe primary cause of dropped calls is low signal output power from the cell phone to the cell tower, which limits the phone's ability to communicate with the tower. A typical cell phone provides merely one-fifth of a watt of output power. To address this problem, the amplifier and the outside antenna work together to increase the phone's output power by more than 15 times over using just the phone alone.
Enjoy Premium Reception and Fewer Dropped CallsIf you have to go to the window or outside to be able to use your cell phone, you know the frustration of weak cell phone signal reception. Using state-of-the-art technology, the Wilson DT amplifies the signal both to and from the cell tower, increasing the power to penetrate through natural or man-made obstructions, thus enabling you to communicate where you were unable to before.
The Wilson DT comes with a compact signal booster that fits neatly on your desk or small table, and it works best when placed in the room where you're experiencing problems with reception.
Included Hardware for Multiple Mounting OptionsThe Wilson DT is connected via a coaxial cable to the outside antenna, which performs best when mounted outside of the building and pointed towards the nearest cell tower. The antenna may also be mounted on a window (again, best when aimed at the nearest cell tower), or on an outside wall; however, some performance may be lost.
Once installed, the Wilson DT enhances the signal of multiple cell phones and data cards near the device. The result is that you will experience fewer dropped calls, clearer call quality, and improved data rates--even with 3G technologies.
Compatible with Most Cell Phone Models and ProvidersThe Wilson DT is compatible with all US and Canadian cellular providers, excluding iDEN, Nextel, and MIKE. Also, it supports CDMA, TDMA, GSM, and AMPS cell phone technologies, as well as data protocols such as GPRS, 1xRTT, HSDPA, EVDO, and EDGE. The use of radio distribution equipment that enhances, extends or amplifies a wireless signal may be prohibited without the consent of the wireless carrier upon whose network such equipment will be used. You should consult with your carrier before purchasing such equipment to use with that carrier's service.
The Wilson DT Signal Booster includes a 30-day money-back guarantee and is backed by a one-year manufacturer's warranty.

This is my second Alfa adapter, it is by far the most effective way I have found to connect a desktop computer to a wireless network.
However, its performance is so good that it also makes a great supplementary adapter for laptops, allowing you to get a much stronger signal (transmit and receive) than with most laptop's internal WiFi adapter. In fact I find its performance comparable to the more expensive directional WiFi systems from H-Field and such.

Channel Vision Coaxial Tap Splitter - 6DB Line Tap - 2 Way Review

Channel Vision Coaxial Tap Splitter - 6DB Line Tap - 2 Way

I bought this tap to replace a 9dB PDI "Mega Tap".
Unfortunately with this splitter installed the SNR on my cable modem, installed on the -6dB leg, swings wildly by at least 4dB (38 to 34). Before with the PDI tap the SNR was very stable and higher (38.8 to 39). A back and forth comparison today confirmed these results.
I think the advertised attenuation values are pretty close. I was at about 8dBmV with the -6 tap and now 5dBmV back on the PDI tap.

USB to USB Mode 34mm ExpressCard Host Adapter for 3G AirCard ExpressCard ATandT Cingular Sprint Verizon Kyocera Marlin Novatel Sierra Wireless, NOT for PCMCIA PC card 54mm
Average Reviews:

Bought this adapter for my Verizon Novatel PC770 modem, because my new Laptop did not have a PCMCIA or Expresscard slot.
Before I got the adapter, on my old laptop I never got more than 3 bars of signal, even with an external antenna hooked up. Now with the cable connected to the USB port, I get 5 bars of signal, which equals a higher data rate. It works so well, I'd recommend everyone buys it, even if you have PCMCIA/Expresscard slots, just for the signal improvement.
Note that the adapter only works with a modem that uses the USB mode of the Expresscard/PCMCIA interface. Problem is that no-one tells you how the card works. Guess the PC770 works via the USB mode because this adapter works perfectly.

Electroline EDA FT08100 8-port TV Signal Booster/Amplifier with Active Return Path Review

Electroline EDA FT08100 8-port TV Signal Booster/Amplifier with Active Return Path
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this unit because I have two analog feeds and two QAM digital capture feeds (via an HDHR unit) that I use in conjunction with SageTV for recording television. I also have a cable modem so there's a couple splitters involved. I did purchase good passive splitters (Monster 2 and 3 ways), however the QAM signal quality levels and the modem performance were not ideal.
I got this model because of the cable modem support. Imagine my surprise when the first thing to pop out of the box is a note from the manufacturer that it's best to put your cable modem on it's own line off a splitter and not hook it up to this unit because some signal loss may occur. What the..?!?!? After ranting for a while and generally annoying my wife with my whining I hooked it up anyway and took some measurements. Fortunately their warnings are not necessary - they may want to think about rewording that little note a pinch.
Here's the hard numbers:
The QAM capture signal strength using a Monster 3 way split off the single line coming in my house (I have no up stream splitters - it's all centralized in closet) for the HD ABC feed had a strength of 88 and a signal quality of 92. Putting the one line as the feed into the 8 port amplifier and running the QAM ports off of it the strength jumped to 92 and the signal quality hovered around 94. Nice. Doesn't sound like a huge deal but for HD QAM captures it makes a difference.
I didn't notice any different before or after with the analog channels - I wasn't having a problem with those.
The cable modem was the item I worried about. Downstream from the splitters it was pretty bad - anything would be an improvement. With the outside cable plugged into the Motorola modem directly downstream signal to noise ratio was 38.6 dB (higher is better, anything over 30 and you're aces), the down stream power is .2 dBmV (fine) and the upstream power was 42 dB (anything less than 50 and you're fine). After running it through the 8 port amp the downstream noise ratio was 38.3, down stream power 1.7 and the upstream power stayed at 42. All dandy numbers. I checked the speeds at several sites before and after and they all averaged about 10 meg down and 1.5 meg up across the boards - virtually no difference. Just about exactly as good as a direct connection and much better than down stream from a passive splittler, even a good one.
So - short version I'm extremely happy with the purchase but I'd suggest to the fine folks at Electroline that they rethink their warning note in their box so as not to tick folks off too quickly for no reason.

This was my second try at a long range wifi antenna. My previous purchase was a "802.11g USB WiFi Wireless Lan Adapter w/5dBi Antenna", which failed miserably. So far, in the last few weeks, this has been pretty good at detecting signals. Installation was a breeze on the Windows XP laptop. Only suggestion would be to make this connect directly to the usb port instead of using a long wire -- would make a cleaner look.

Bi-Directional Cable-TV Amplifier HDTV Ready Review

Bi-Directional Cable-TV Amplifier HDTV Ready
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just purchased this at radio shack for $32 plus tax... Install it as close as you can to the external box for your cable (you want to amplify the best signal you can for your entire system, placement closest to point of origin is best), turn it to highest amplification and plug it in...
I could not receive channels above 600 consistently, and my lower band channels that are not digital and had poor reception for my HDTV became vibrant again.
Absolute bargain, it works, it is easy to install... what can I say? Others have noted that it is far smarter to install an amp than to call the cable company out and have them spend hours trying to find where the loss of signal is (having done this in the past, I agree!!)

Performance - 5 stars.
Reliability - 4 stars
Tech Support- 5 stars
EDIT: Problem below (previously posted) was NOT Sabrent's fault! I now rate this 4-5 stars.
-------------
After 3 days of incredible performance, 5 bars solid where before I was averaging 2-3, the Sabrent NT-WGHU High-Power 1000mw Wireless USB 802.11g Adapter crapped out. My PC detected its presence but where the reception bars are displayed was a big red X. Clicked the troubleshoot option but it only declared that it was not connected. Physical connection was fine. A reboot and driver reinstall was no help. Seller sent another unit but it too did not work!
-------------
EDIT: Maybe this will help others with the same problem. The problem was that some automatic Windows update (Windows 7) made the NT-WGHU software bomb out. When I did a Windows restore to a week earlier restore point the reinstall went flawlessly and the Sabrent came right back up to 5 bars. It's scary though that I have to check after any Windows update to see if everything still works. So I give it only 4 stars on reliability.
I must mention that Sabrent's telephone support was EXCELLENT. The number I got off the internet connected to California... not around the world. There was zero wait to talk to a tech. First guy gave a few recommendations on uninstalling/installing which didn't help. (I had done that stuff already but thought I'd dutifully try again). I called back within 15 minutes and immediately connected again, but to a different guy. He suggested the Windows restore routine which worked.

I was stuck with the adapter my desktop computer came with... This was fine until I moved into a new apartment building that only had WiFi and I was the furthest apartment away from the source. I had 1-0 bars and constantly lost connection.
I bought this nifty device when I had enough of bad internet. I was skeptical, I had never heard of this particular adapter, and it was selling for basically dirt. I bought it anyway. This adapter improved my signal up to 4-5 bars, and yes, I can see other networks I couldn't before (I even get 4-bar access to the Holiday Inn that is some distance away from me). It's fast and it's reliable.
The adapter came with a CD to install drivers. I didn't bother with it: I had my computer automatically download the drivers and it worked within SECONDS.
Oh: I'm running on Windows 7. It DOES work on Windows 7. The drivers just may not be on the disk. Have Windows search for those drivers instead (with an internet connection, of course).
Fantastic product.
