(More customer reviews)Can't get my new laptop to recognize a serial transcription pedal plugged into the USB via the Belkin because there is no Windows 7 driver. It's not mentioned on the CD that came with the cable. Nor is there a Windows 7 driver available on the Belkin site. Works fine on an old XP machine but that's not the one I bought the cable for since that pc also has serial. Windows 7 has been out a while so I wonder if Belkin even plans on creating drivers for that OS for its existing cables.

(More customer reviews)I do embedded hardware development, and frequently need RS232 for communication or debug with embedded devices. As PCs typically no longer include serial ports have become vital.
The nature of my work also means the devices I'm communicating with use a variety of baud rates, and are frequently powered up and down, causing spurious receive bits or handshake changes. Older Prolific USB-serial chipsets and especially FTDI chipsets handle such situations incredibly badly, and can easily get in a state where they do not send or receive any more serial traffic until the USB-serial adapter is unplugged and replugged - frustrating and time-consuming. The newer Prolific chipset on this device appears solid, and I've not yet lost serial traffic due to baud changes or power cycles of serial devices.

IDC 10 / DB9 Male, Motherboard Serial Port Connector cable Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a standard 9-pin RS232 serial header cable and this was it. I had read from various reviews that there are different versions of these things but this one is the standard straight-thru pinout. So, unless you're looking for a proprietary one for specific equipment, this one should work for normal standard PC motherboards.
Got it today, plugged it into my standard PC motherboard (ECS A780GM-A) COM header and connected my TV cable box to it and viola, my MythTV DVR PC was changing channels on the cable box the same as it was before with my old motherboard that had a serial port on the back.

I have also purchased a "non-ruggedized version," and I wouldn't recommend it unless absolutely necessary. It is little more flimsy in the connection between the cable and the CF card, and extra care needs to be taken when handling the "non-ruggedized" version. Overall, I am very pleased with this product.

It came quickly but the CD wouldn't read. So the vendor sent me the drivers. Still no joy.
I searched and tried a dozen drivers. Nothing works. After reading many posts, it seems like a common problem. A replacement part seems to be the only solution.
The vendor offered a replacement. It wasn't worth going to the PO to send it back. I found another that worked fine first time.

(More customer reviews)This adaptor is considerably cheaper than many on the market but works perfectly well. It appears robust and well made as well as simple to use.
I've not used any other adaptors so don't know if this is universally true but the thing that I liked most about this adaptor is how simple they've made the software that ships with the device. There is no fancy front end bloat ware, just a simple set of drivers on a CD.
Although, the installation is easy if you have a small ammount of knowledge about PCs, it wouldn't have hurt to put a note on the box for the benefit of less tech savy users of how to find the instructions. There are no paper instructions with the product but there are instructions hidden on the CD. Open it up in explorer and look in the directory with the same name as the product. The instructions are good and show how to install in straight forward pictures of exactly what to click on.
Using Windows XP, Just insert the CD, plug the adaptor into a USB port and wait for the 'found new hardware' wizard to start. All the settings are standard and your PC will know where to find the drivers. After you've installed it, you may need to know the COM number of your new port. You can open the hardware manager, that's in right-click 'My computer' - properties - Hardware - 'Device Manager'. Look in the 'ports' sub menu and you'll see the new port with it's COM number. Any software that connects to a serial device will need to know the COM number to work. The other way to find out is to just try ports 1,2,3,... untill the software for your PDA or whatever manages to connect. I know that sounds complicated but I've spelled it out in great detail, it's really fairly intuitive.
In short, before you junk that old programmable remote control or PDA because your new laptop doesn't have a serial port, use this, it's cheap and it works.

(More customer reviews)The package that arrived look very different from the package pictured. It was a pretty simple bubble pack. A "PTC" sticker had been placed on top of the original manufacturer's name, "Viewcon". I plugged this in to a windows XP machine, and it worked out of the box, with no additional drivers necessary. I plugged this in to a Mac OS 10.6.8 machine and got nothing. So I went to install the drivers. Unfortunately, the product ships with a "mini" cd, making it impossible to put into a modern MacBook or MacBook Pro computer. I stuck the CD into my XP machine, shared the files over the net and followed the directions to install the driver. The driver is really made for Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger). I was doubtful if it was going to work. While I attempted to follow the directions provided for Mac installation, they were out of date, and slightly different from the screens I was actually seeing. The driver installation required a restart. After the restart, the new hardware was discovered, and I was able to use it right away with a terminal program. I am unsure whether "an activation" was required, and I don't think I activated anything. I wouldn't call this the perfect product, but it worked.

I am using it with WinXP Service Pack 2, and it communicates great with a complex serial interface to an unusual piece of electronics I have, so its very compatible with "real" serial ports, unlike some other adapters I have tried that seem to only work with modems or PDA docks. The adapter as shipped is actually a small 1"x1.5"x3" box connected to your computer with a 3' USB cable that can be unplugged from it. It has a green LED on top to tell you when it is properly configured as well as when a program has opened that serial port and when it is passing data. Very functional and easy to use; the configuration software even includes tests to make sure the device is recognized and is properly communicating with your computer. The configuration software also ensures that the same COM port is assigned to the device, no matter which USB port on your computer you plug it into each time, unlike previous adapters I've had which created a different COM port each time you plugged the device into a different USB port (very annoying); the driver also has an option to behave like those other drivers, but most people will probably want to always have it act like the same COM port, the default.
