The HX2190 lets you connect wirelessly and securely to e-mail servers, mobile messaging services, the Internet, and company networks while eating at a cafe, staying at a hotel, or killing time at a train station or airport, as long as the business is equipped with a WiFi hot spot. As a result, it's never been easier to work on important Microsoft Word or Excel docs while traveling or trade e-mails with business partners--all without hauling along a cumbersome laptop. Add in the ability to watch video, listen to music, and access your PC-based calendar and you have an ideal device for the modern on-the-go professional.
The HX2190 comes preloaded with Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, which includes updated Microsoft Office Mobile software and persistent memory storage for more efficient data management. The Office Mobile Suite comprises Word Mobile for text documents, Excel Mobile for viewing and creating charts, and PowerPoint Mobile for viewing and giving presentations on the go. Users will also dig Windows Mobile's ActiveSync 4.0, which helps them quickly and securely transfer information from their PC/servers to the Pocket PC and vice versa. Want to export your address book, calendar, and other items to the HX2190? Not a problem with ActiveSync 4.0. Other Windows Mobile features include an integrated multimedia application (Windows Media Player 10), multiple personalization options, Pocket MSN for one-click access to MSN Hotmail and MSN Messenger, and a function called Persistent Store, which safeguards your data even when the HX2190's battery is removed.
The HX2190 is loaded under the hood, too, or--more accurately--under the flip cover. The device boasts a solid 312 MHz Intel XScale processor that's quick and responsive, along with 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of flash ROM. The unit is also expandable via its integrated CompactFlash type II (CF) and Secure Digital (SDIO) slots, which work with such media as MicroDrives, CF GPS, SD 56k modem cards, and traditional memory cards.And like most Pocket PCs, the iPaq HX2190 supports both wireless WiFi (802.11b) and Bluetooth technologies, while also offering a standard IR port and a USB sync ports. Not only do the technologies support both standard wireless and wired connections for data transfers and online activity, but they also let you use many wireless peripherals, such as Bluetooth keyboards.
And because the HX2190 is a business-oriented device, it's outfitted with HP ProtectTools, a security-oriented option that allows mobile users to secure devices by PIN or password to control access. The industry-standard encryption then protects stored data from prying eyes and online thieves.
Other details include a 3.5-inch transflective TFT display with 64,000 colors, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a charging cradle, and an ergonomic, easy-to-wield design. The HX2190 measures 4.71 by 3.01 by 0.65 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

(More customer reviews)I spent several weeks looking at the assortment of PDA's presently on the market. A number of excellent "palmtops" are available, some outstanding for what they do, but they just didn't have the "stuff" I wanted. Furthermore, I'm a longtime keyboard person, and wasn't particularly excited by all the stylus models.
The Jornada 690 is as close to the right choice as I've been able to find for that combination of features, software, usability and portability I've been seeking. The keyboard is cramped and takes some getting used to, but with practice it's usable. The stylus, functioning as a mouse is basically intuitive, and the sketching utility is handy for my particular line of work.
The startup was flawless, and it linked up with my desktop immediately, requiring only a couple of adjustments to have them conversing comfortably. I've had no lockups nor crashes in CE or any of the apps. So far it has run reliably, and is exactly what I had hoped, a laptop I can carry around in my hand, for me the right choice. I give it 5 stars and hope H-P and MS will continue to support it.

Hewlett Packard Jornada 728 Review

(More customer reviews)Purchased a Jornada 728 several weeks ago, this is my second PDA. I am very pleased with its quality and functionality. It does not replace a laptop but it is sure handy for checking mail, news, web sites, and does an amazing job with MP3 audio.
My system includes a 128 compact flash card (installs into the bottom of the 728) and a Socket low power 802.11b wireless network card which installs into the PC Card slot by using a PC Card/Compact Flash adapter .... The CF wireless network card will not work in the CF compartment on the bottom on the 728 because when inserted you cannot close the lid covering & securing the CF device. The CF compartment on the bottom will only accept CF devices the size of memory cards.
Even with the 802.11b card running I have yet to exhaust the battery. After 4 hours of computing it indicated ½ charge remaining. Overall I am very pleased with the unit. I mostly use the PDA pointer for navigating web sites, but when needed the key board works pretty good (takes a little practice getting used to but you do use both hands the same as a normal keyboard).
Instead of the Pocket PC 2002 operating system used by the newer 1/4 screen PDA's the 728 runs the Handheld PC 2000 Operating System (H/PC 2000). The H/PC operating system is not receiving the software support enjoyed by PPC 2002 devices. Consequently I had to purchase 3rd party MSN Messenger software ... and an NNTP news reader .... Also, there is no e-book reader available for it from Microsoft. The only other negative from my experience is it will not support streaming media from the Internet and no Real Audio player. I cannot listen to Internet Radio (not Windows Media or Real Audio). Lastly, I can't seem to get the VPN client to function correctly.
On the plus side, the 1/2 VGA screen is very usable and I have had great success using it to surf Internet and for web based mail (both Exchange and Groupwise). It also handles SSL. The 728's big plus is it usability, very usable screen and keyboard, and very portable (I do carry it often in my pocket). Battery life is excellent and the Terminal Services client works 100%. The audio quality with MP3 is VERY impressive (using headphones) and for what it lacked in shipped software, I was able to find 3 rd party (minus some way to steam medial). It also does a good job as a network client. I am able to connect to Windows 2000 servers and transfer files the same as from a desktop.
It does not have the functionality or software support of a laptop, but it is the next best thing!

(More customer reviews)I purchased this to connect a Dell PDA to a Raven GPS system. It works very well for this combination. I have also purchased a "non-ruggedized version," and I wouldn't recommend it unless absolutely necessary. It is little more flimsy in the connection between the cable and the CF card, and extra care needs to be taken when handling the "non-ruggedized" version. Overall, I am very pleased with this product.
