Motorola i465 Clutch - Cellular phone - iDEN - QWERTY keyboard - Boost Review

Before you read this keep in mind i've never spent more than $30 for a phone before.
I've had previous experience with both ATT go-phones and Virgin Mobile. I bought this phone to finally replace my home phone line since the Boost service offers unlimited everything for $50.oo a month, which is a pretty awesome price for a pre-paid phone.
The service:
L-o-v-e it! I mean, the talking & texting is just like any other phone, nothing special, but I like not having to keep track of minutes or texts or kilobytes in my head when i'm trying to talk to someone or do something on my phone. I stick to main roads and downtown areas mostly so I don't have many problems with dead zones, though as i watch the bars traveling around i can see how some people might.
The phone:
Little disappointed for my first phone that i paid enough for so that i be concerned if the screen got scratched or it fell in the toilet. Other than the camera, which is webcam quality at best, it seems to look, feel, and act like any other cheezy phone i've ever had. The only difference is that its got a keyboard (which is a given positive for texters). Oddly enough though (and it kind of annoys me), you know how most phones have an alarm clock and a calander built into the phone's software? Well, with this phone, its a pre-installed java app. On the up-side though, the speakerphone is rediculously loud, clear, and easy to acivate, to the point where i find myself using it for most of my calls.
Side notes:
One main thing i bought this phone for was to replace my dial-up internet (netzero) because i had to shut off the phone line and the internet service in order to pay the $50 bucks a month for the boost service. Well, this review is proof that its possible (and rather simple) to do that because i'm using the phone's internet from my computer right now to write this. Just buy the cable off amazon.com for a buck (of course theres an eight dollar shipping charge), download MotoConnect from [...](freeware), and when the cable arrives you might have to reshape the plastic part around the connecter with a pocket knife so it will stop popping out of the phone, but it works. Don't know what the exact speed is, but it loads webpages at a similar speed compared to 56k dialup and downloads files at about 2.5KBps. The computer will recognize the phone as an "iDen" modem and you set up a new dialup connection with the phone number "S=#777". The username and password don't matter and BAM! your online, no extra ISP (like aol or netzero) necessary. Whats really cool is it connects in like 8 seconds. This feature is also supposed to be possible without the cable if you have a bluetooth-enabled laptop or one of the little USB bluetooth adapters available at amazon for like 5 bucks with shipping.
I know one thing that your all probably going to be interested in is the GPS service from boost. Well, sadly, it doesn't come with the $50 a month unlimited plan. its another java app, that cost $2 a day or $10 a month to subscribe to. However, the phone has a built-in software that will tell you your geo-graphic quadinates, just no map.
All-in-all, i'd recommend the service, but the only thing that is going to make the phone worth its price is the keyboard & bluetooth compatability. Whether or not its worth the extra 80 bucks is up to you.

Brother MFC-5460cn Color Photo Inkjet All-in-One Flatbed with Networking Review

Brother MFC-5460cn Color Photo Inkjet All-in-One Flatbed with Networking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking to buy a printer and fax machine for some time. Our old fax m/c and the printer had reached the end of their lives. Recently Brother is having some great promotions with 2 year extended warranties. With the advertised low prices for these machines, I couldn't resist. After some research I decided to order the 5460 multi function all in one. Boy, am I delighted!
What I like:
============
- Setup was very easy. Hooking up the machine took me about 10 minutes. Installing the software, another 8-10.
- The print quality was great.
- The printer is network ready. It works with both wired and wireless networks. This feature alone is worth the price. No need for any wires from your computer or any computer on the network to the printer. If you don't have a network at home, don't worry. You can hook using a USB cable. The manufacturers don't include a USB printer cable usually as with this product. So don't discard the cable if you are throwing away your old printer - they cost around 35 bucks.
- You can receive the faxes onto your computer. You need to change the mode on the machine panel. The setup software opened up all the ports necessary. Now all the junk faxes goes to your PC and you don't have to waste paper! Even if your PC is off, the faxes are stored in the machine's memory so that you can later 'download' to your PC.
- You can send faxes right out of your PC using the provided software. Another cool thing. As I work from home remotely, this helps me a lot. Otherwise, I would have had to print out the documents before faxing. The software comes with an address book which can sync with your Outlook address book.
- The setup also enables your PC for internet faxing. i.e., even if you don't have your Brother fax machine connected, as long as you have an internet connection, you can fax documents using the internet. This is pretty cool though not a new feature. While I am at the airport, I can fax those last minute expense reports right from my laptop.
- I haven't tried the scan feature yet, that will be the least used feature for me.
- Given the print quality is good, I would believe the copier would be just great as well.
- The paper feeder sits within the footprint of the machine. This is another neat and space saving feature - no awkward paper supports hanging out.
- You also have digital media reader right in the front so that you can print directly from your media.
- The all-in-one is a space saver. It cleared much space off my work table. With all-in-ones, say, if the cartridge goes bust, all parts are affected though.
What could be better?
=====================
- The USB cable and the network cable slots are not on the outside of the machine. You have to lift up the top bed and wire these inside. This takes up about 10-20% of the cable length depending on where you position your PC/laptop relative to the machine.
- The Brother cartridges are always relatively expensive compared to, say, Canon. I have found that Brother's tend to be more durable than Canon. But for the higher end Canon's you do pay more. So it is a trade-off between up-front price/running cost (ink refills, cartridge) and reliability.
At this point I love the machine. For $99 after MIR and extended 2 yr warranty, it is a great holiday deal!

Panasonic BL-PA100KTA Ethernet Adaptor Starter Pack Includes two HD-PLC (High Definition Power Communication) Review

Panasonic BL-PA100KTA Ethernet Adaptor Starter Pack Includes two HD-PLC (High Definition Power Communication)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I researched competing products from DLink and NetGear online and read numerous reviews. Any of the HD-PLC products should perform similarly in the same situation. Before deciding on a powerline Ethernet product be sure to understand that the quality of your home wiring and the distance the signal must travel all can affect the performance of the product. Poor quality wiring or very long electrical runs may limit performance.
What I liked most about the Panasonic product is that the kit which includes two units is preconfigured, so it works right out of the box without any special configuration. I didn't have to install ANY software to get my network running. I plugged in one unit to my Internet router, and the other unit into a power outlet in a nearby office. Once I connected the Ethernet cable, I was up and running. It was really that easy.
One nice thing with this unit is that you can run a speed test from the unit itself, with the front LED's displaying the estimated network performance. This was handy as I tried different outlet combinations to acheive the best performance. As a side note, I found that plugging the "Master" unit into an outlet as close as possible to the breaker box yeilded the best results. By putting the master as close to the break box as possible (electrica wiring distance) I was able to get a much better signal. I have the master unit in a downtairs room that is about 40' from the breaker box, and the secondary unit in an upstairs office that is about 65' feet from the breaker box.
Note that any powerline Ethernet product is susceptible to interference from other devices. Pay attention to the manual regarding the types of devies that can cause interference, and avoid ever pluggint the device into a surge protector, since that will greatly limit performance.
An additional nice feature of the Panasonic unit compared with DLink and NetGear is that the unit has a power cable. This allows me to plug it into "hidden" outlets, and then place the box in an easy to reach location. Both the NetGear and DLink products are a box that plugs directly into the outlet. This makes them more difficult to access, especially if you want to look at the box to see what it is doing. I like that the Panasonic can sit nicely on the corner of my desk and I can see the lights. I also suspect that the Panasonic will operate cooler since it can be placed in locations where there is air flow all around the unit.
Performance will vary by house and situation. I have a gigabit network switch that connects my machine directly to a server. When I copy a 50 megabyte file to my server using Windows XP, it takes 8 to 9 seconds to copy a 50 megabyte file. Running the same 50 megabyte file copy to a machine on the HD-PLC network connection took about 27 seconds. This seems to be pretty good performance overall. Note that "speed test" is only as good as what is being tested. My test was a real world test under Windows XP copying a 50 megabyte ZIP file.

Belkin USB SERIAL PORT ADAPTER ( F5U409-CU ) Review

Belkin USB SERIAL PORT ADAPTER ( F5U409-CU )

Can't get my new laptop to recognize a serial transcription pedal plugged into the USB via the Belkin because there is no Windows 7 driver. It's not mentioned on the CD that came with the cable. Nor is there a Windows 7 driver available on the Belkin site. Works fine on an old XP machine but that's not the one I bought the cable for since that pc also has serial. Windows 7 has been out a while so I wonder if Belkin even plans on creating drivers for that OS for its existing cables.

Socket Communications CS0400-479 Bluetooth Cordless Serial Adapter Review

Socket Communications CS0400-479 Bluetooth Cordless Serial Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Firstly this wireless serial adapter is much slicker than IOGEAR's. And for the price it should be. This unit has no dip switches and is slightly more compact.
As with IOGEAR's wireless serial adapter, this device should be DCE and not DTE. Take a look around at serial devices. They are DTE. So why make a product that will require the use of a clumsy and bulky null-modem cable 95% of the time? In my case 100% of the time.
WARNING!!! This device does not support low speed serial such as 9600 baud. This is a must for my purposes as I was hoping to use this to configure networking elements such as routers, switches, firewalls, et el. 99% of which have a default console setting of 9600 baud.
Also I would have liked to see a fully self contained unit. Meaning no need for an AC adapter. Yes, this unit MUST be plugged into an AC outlet to function! The necessity of an AC adapter completely negates any claim of "cleans up cable clutter". Also I foresee instances where AC power will be hard to obtain (e.g. only DC power available).
I put some thought into this last night and it would have been ideal for this adapter to have a small rechargeable lithium ion battery built in for short term use. For long term use this device would have two options 1. USB and 2. AC. USB power cable and AC power adapter would connect to the same power input on the device and would also facilitate battery recharging.
As it stands this device is neither convenient or useful. It is far more cumbersome to use than simply plugging in a console cable.
