Philips HDR312 TiVo 30-Hour Digital Video Recorder Review

Philips HDR312 TiVo 30-Hour Digital Video Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
TiVo's claim that they'll change the way you watch TV is completely true. Being able to pause or replay whatever you're currently watching to grab a snack, answer a call, etc. is great. You can't imagine how helpful it is to have almost two weeks of programming information available to pick and chose what to record for the next few days.
I'd recommend the 30hr unit over the 14hr if you can afford it. After you start searching the two week guide by program name, channel name, favorite channels, or by time of day you'll quickly find plenty of things you want to record.
DirecTV viewers will especially find this useful...it makes all those channels much more manageable, and I prefer the TiVo on-screen guide to the one my DSS box provided.
All of the TiVo menus are well thought out, attractive, and *very* easy to use. They include lots of cables - including S-Video, a phone jack splitter (nice touch), and other goodies so almost anyone will find everything they need to hook TiVo up right out of the box. The User's Guide is helpful too, for people who are a little less sure of themselves around stuff like this.
I picked TiVo over ReplayTV because of their close alliance with DirecTV (DirecTV has invested in them), and from reading other people's comments in newsgroups and other forums. After I spent about half an hour going through the program guide and giving various programs 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' ratings (one of the cooler features of TiVo), it came up with a whole bunch of other programs it suggested I might like.
I'm probably sounding like a company spokesperson, but I'm not, I'm just a *very* happy new user of TiVo!

Unlike analog VCRs, Philips's HDR312 personal TV receiver uses TiVo technology to store compressed audio-video data to a computer hard disk. When you're ready to watch a preselected program, the HDR312 retrieves it upon command from a list of shows you've recorded.
Among the most revolutionary aspects of the Philips/TiVo server is the ability to pause live broadcasts and either resume a program where you left off or return to the program in real time. For example, while watching live sporting events, you can replay the last eight seconds of the action. You can then return to the live broadcast at any time. Using the palm-size remote, you can rewind and fast-forward pretaped programs, skipping through recorded commercials if you choose. Philips supplies all the necessary cables for setting up the HDR312, including a 50-foot phone line and splitter. You don't need a separate phone line; simply connect the splitter to the wall, connect your phone and receiver cable to the splitter, and you're in business. The phone line is vital, however, for downloading TV listings; recording shows; and receiving TiVo's Suggestions feature, which suggests programs you might enjoy based on your previous selections, and TiVolution Magazine, which offers recommendations on the best programs to watch. After the initial download, the receiver spends about five minutes updating your programming data each night. TiVo's onscreen setup guide includes easy step-by-step instructions. TiVo charges $12.95 a month for its weekly listing service, TiVolution Magazine, and its Suggestions feature, or you can pay a one-time service charge of $299. Once you've selected a program to record, you have four choices of picture quality: basic, medium, high, or best. The higher settings take up more storage space, which translates into fewer hours of available record time.

USB VOIP Phone Adapter, Support SIP, Skype Review

USB VOIP Phone Adapter, Support SIP, Skype
Average Reviews:

Great device and idea
allows you to make Skype calls from your regular phone and accept Skype calls on regualr phone.
Installation went easy and simple.
The only "problem" is that because of USB cable it has to be placed near your PC so it's sometimes a problem to connect all house phones to it (because home phone line entry point located usually far from PC).
But if you managed to do so or use only cordless phone set with several handsets it's not a problem.
Otherwise only one phone set can be connected and even if it cordless it's a bit unconvinient.
Another thing that missing is ability to "flash" (call waiting) between normal and Skype calls.
Also, after installation the software sometimes redefines your default Windows sound device making you think that your sound gone - just go to "Control Panel"->"Sound and Audio Devices" and set your old soundcard back to be default one.
P.S.: personally I would prefer simular device but the one that have Skype client "built-in" connected by network to router not USB to PC (or even better by WiFi) so you would not need you PC be turned on all the time. But since my PC is on 24/7/365 it's not a problem for me.
*Edited*: Aperently 2 revisions of the device exists "the old one" where you use "*" to switch to Skype dialing ane "new one" where you use "**".
The problem with old revision is that you can't use regular "*" services (like *72 and such) on regular line becouse it switches to Skype.

Finally, a sub $100.00 8 port switch/router/VPN/firewall with Stateful Packet Inspection and everything you need to get your SOHO safely connected to the Internet. There are other's out there, but nowhere near the features at this price range. Setup in place of an older Linksys HPRO200 router/firewall was about 10 minutes including wiring and cycling the cable modem. Rule sets will take awhile longer, but should be nice once it's done with configuration backup and restore features.

Belkin F5D7132 Wireless-G Universal Range Extender Review

Belkin F5D7132 Wireless-G Universal Range Extender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have shared the same experience as the most helpful reviews here: this is a pain to install when you want to configure this Extender to be secure (so strangers can't mooch off of your internet or worse). On the other hand, once you have it set up, it works like a charm.
It's possible, but prepare to burn an hour or three. I would like to add some instructional steps, which are a variation of the very helpful ones already present here on Amazon.
Dummies Guide on How to set up the Extender with security turned on:
1. Completely ignore the instruction sheet that comes with the product. At first, I tried following it stubbornly despite reading these Amazon reviews, and I found that it is an embarrassment. Shame on you Belkin, for giving us so much unnecessary grief.
2. Find a computer in your home to use for this setup. Any computer (that isn't Vista) will do.
3. If this computer happens to be plugged into your router (I'm not talking about not the Extender), unplug it from the router. If this computer happens to have a wireless connection, disable the wireless connection.
4. Plug in the power cord for the Extender into the wall, then connect an ethernet cord (looks like a fat telephone cord) into the back of the Extender, then stick the other end into your computer. The "LAN" light will now light up. Just in case you're concerned, you can ignore the red "search" light that may blink.
5. Install the "Belkin Range Extender Utility" onto this computer. The installation CD will place a program in your Start->Programs menu once you run the install.
6. Go to start->settings->network connections. At this point the only enabled network connection should be Local Area Network (or Local Connection... the name may differ slightly for you). If anything else is enabled, disable it. Right click Local Area Network and select Properties. You're now looking for a new window to pop up that lists a bunch of internet-sounding words like Network or QoS. Look for the item called Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Double click that.
7. Select manual IP, and enter 192.168.2.100
8. The subnet mask will get filled out automatically. Ignore the gateway. Hit OK, you're finished.
9. Start up the Belkin utility, and hit "refresh" if nothing shows up on the list of detected Extenders. If you're lucky, you will see the Extender show up, and you can now click "Web Management".
10. If no items show up on the Belkin Utility's list, or an item does show up but the "web management" icon is unclickable, then repeat steps 6-9 but enter the IP address 192.168.1.100 instead. Then the Extender should show up.
11. Finally, once you are able to click "Web Management", it will bring you to a webpage that is very much like a Router setup page. The details of what you need to do here can be found in instructional docs on the web elsewhere. The basic idea is that you want to copy pretty much everything over to be identical to what your router settings are. The only exception is possibly the SSID of the Belkin Extender. Depending on your preference, you may want to choose a different name for it just so you can confirm that its really working later on.
12. Save those settings (there's a systems tab at the bottom of the web management panel that allows you to save the settings into a file as a backup).
13. Unplug the Extender from the computer, unplug the power for the Extender, and move the extender to wherever you want. Plug the power back in.
14. Go back to steps 6-9. Remove the manual IP configuration for your Local Area Connection, and revert the panels back to the way they were (which is probably "automatically obtain ip address"). Hit OK. Enable all your network connections if you disabled them in step 6.
15. You should now be able to use your wireless connection to see the Extender under its fresh new SSID. Enjoy.
A version of the above for those that are network-saavy:
1. Disconnect all wireless from your computer, then connect your computer directly to the Extender as if it were a router. Power up the Extender.
2. Manually specify your computer's IP address to be 192.168.2.xxx with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Yes, I know this step is weird. I'll explain the reason for it in step#4.
3. Install the Belkin Network utility. Its a simple executable. Start it up. It's purpose is to scan for the Extender, provided that your Extender is directly wired to your computer (which we did in step 1).
4. You should see your Extender show up in the utility. If the Extender does not show up or the "Web Management" button is greyed out, this is because your computer and the Belkin Extender are on different subnets. The Belkin Extender is usually shipped from the warehouse hardwired to the IP Address 192.168.2.254. What??? When you plug your computer into the Extender, you need to hardwire your computer to be on the same subnet so the stupid utility will work. Hence, since the factory setting for the Extender is 192.168.2.254, hardwiring your computer's IP to 192.168.2.100 will get the utility to connect to the Extender. However, if for some awful reason your Extender is hardwired to some other IP Address (which is configurable once you get to step#5), you need to change your computer's IP Address to have a value that matches the Extender's new subnet. In other words, if the Extender IP somehow changes to 192.168.5.254, you should change your computer IP address to 192.168.5.100
5. Once you click "Web Management" you can configure the Extender via a browser window. Replicate your router's settings here (they all need to match the original router's, with the exception of the Extender's SSID).
6. Hit Save, then unplug the Extender's power cord and ethernet, and then move it to wherever you would like. Power it up again.
7. Remove your computer's manual IP address. You're now officially done.
*As a note, I had occasional connection problems when I had my Belkin router & extender encryption set to WPA-PSK. I just switched my encryption to WEP and now it is fine. Not everyone has this problem.
Up this review, if you found it useful. I want to see other people spared from the excessive pain the rest of us have already experienced!

D-Link DI-714P+ Wireless Cable/DSL Router, 4-Port Switch, Prnt Server, 802.11b, 22Mbps Review

D-Link DI-714P+ Wireless Cable/DSL Router, 4-Port Switch, Prnt Server, 802.11b, 22Mbps
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Setup: fairly straightforward. There is a "wizard" setup for those who don't like to go through every single option screen. The screen navigation is laid out in a simple, but not intuitive manner - it takes a few moments to realize the buttons on the left change with tab options at the top, but the buttons on the left don't change if there are multiple screens on the right (like "next page" or a button to press). There is no "go back a page" - they expect you to hit the button to the right that is still visible. All my complaining about that aside - it's as easy, if not easier, to navigate and find settings than both netgear and linksys.
Print server: no setup available on the router - it either is or is not plugged in. Software setup for PC works fine. Did not try it with linux yet.
Wireless: finally, something that works with 64/128 bit WEP. Netgear never worked. Linksys was so-so. This works. NOTE: For those who want to limit ACCESS to the WIRELESS by MAC ADDRESS - this unit cannot do it. It can limit by MAC to the INTERNET, but that will also limit who can attach to the unit, both with wireless and with a physical connection. Most other units only use this filter to limit access to the wireless portion. If used, you have to put in all the machines connecting to it - both wireless and physical....
Firewall: Syslog, email logs available. Nice. SPI works. DMZ support. Passthrough ports available. Works great with my nortel VPN client (this is always a good test of PPTP and so on).
FIRMWARE NOTE: I had the hardest time getting this thing to work with windows terminal services. No matter what setting I used, it would lock up then drop the connection until I rebooted the router (software reboot). Some settings would go longer, but I could get it to lock up within 2 minutes. Nothing seemed to fix it - a few people have reported this on the internet, but since most people aren't using the terminal services part of windows on a regular basis - they would never know it.
The fix was to load the 1.22 firmware, not the 1.23 that came with it. This REMOVES the 802.1X authentication tab (some type of shared radius key BS - if you want radius support, get a REAL wireless device) and it removes the 4X mode for the B+ series of wireless adapters (which I do not have anyway).
TO LOAD FIRMWARE: you would need to run either executable (one for MAC or the other for PC) OR use the web browser to upload the file (requires either java or activeX - not sure) because it opens up the "open file" dialog box - meaning - experimental browsers, like those in my beloved linux box - don't work well with this. ALSO - it states in no unclear terms DO NOT UPGRADE USING A WIRELESS LINK. Use a hard wired computer. I went from 1.23 to 1.22 and back and forth and so on testing this remote desktop issue.
FINAL FIX: load 1.23, hit the button to reset the router to the defaults, load 1.22, reboot, hit the button to reset the router to the defaults, then type all your configuration back in.
Why the crazy steps? If you loaded 1.23, typed ANYTHING in the boxes that aren't available in 1.22 - it remembers and will cause problems, even though that option isn't availble in 1.22 (I tried this - several times for fun). 1.23 -> load setup defaults -> load 1.22 -> load setup defaults -> configure.
Live without their crippled version of RADIUS (if you don't know what this is you don't need it) and who cares about the crappy 4X mode for the B+ stuff? Another marketing ploy anyway.
Bottom line - with some experimentation, I figured out the firmware thing. IT has worked BETTER than the linksys ever did (can we say firmware of the week?) and improved over the netgears I have used (you can print and not be disconnected from the internet - thanks a lot netgear).
4 stars because firmware is supposed to fix stuff, and their two listed updates should not have affected the RDP stuff in 2000/XP. But it did.

From day one this machine would jamb during every other fax transmission. We experienced nothing but frustration with it until it finally ceased to even receive faxes. Evidently something happened internally and it began stripping the fax tone from the incoming fax call. Consequently, the phone would ring and ring without ever connecting to receive the fax. We sent it back as defective and purchased a Brother machine instead. I do not recommend this device.

D-Link DMF-560TXD Ethernet PC Card and Modem (PC/Mac) Review

D-Link DMF-560TXD Ethernet PC Card and Modem (PC/Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This adapter does not work with Windows Me. Although it appears to have all the features you want at a really nice price, the D-link card is not a good value. In comparison to a premium card, such as Xircom or 3Com, the D-Link card uses 5 volts instead of 3.3 volts, which drains a portable PC's battery much faster. Also, the D-Link card does not have cell phone hookups or a global modem, which limits its use even further. Finally, the company's web site has sparse technical data and the phone technical support department operates on a 'call-back' system that very rarely returns calls.

The D-Link DMF-560TXD is a Direct Port 10/100Mb dual-speed Ethernet PC card with an integrated V.90/K56flex data-fax modem. It allows PC or Power Macintosh laptop users to seamlessly connect to both Ethernet and Fast Ethernet LANs. The D-Link DMF-560TXD also allows users to send and receive faxes, connect to the Internet, and dial into a remote-access server or PC.
The D-Link Direct Port technology allows users to plug their phone and network cables directly into the DMF-560TXD without the need for an external media coupler or dongle. Unlike similar technologies available in the market, D-Link's Direct Port can be plugged into the top PCMCIA type II slot on a notebook or laptop with double PCMCIA slots without blocking access to the second bottom slot.
The DMF-560TXD strictly adheres to the IEEE 802.3 and 802.3u standards for Ethernet and Fast Ethernet and the ITU modem standards including V.90 to ensure maximum interoperability. The DMF-560TXD attempts to connect at the highest speed supported by an ISP, LAN, host modem, or fax machine and automatically defaults to a lower speed until a stable connection can be created.
Now shipping with Macintosh drivers, the DMF-560TXD can be used both with PowerBooks as well as PC-compatible laptops. Microsoft Plug and Play compatibility and a wide assortment of drivers enable the DMF-560TXD to work with most popular operating systems. A menu-driven installation utility and included diagnostics provide a simple method for installation and troubleshooting. Integrated digital line protection protects the modem from being damaged when connecting to a high-current digital PABX.

D-Link DI-524 Wireless 54 Mbps High Speed Router (802.11g) Review

D-Link DI-524 Wireless 54 Mbps High Speed Router (802.11g)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not sure if the other reviewers have problems reading instructions or if they just skipped steps. Had no problems at all getting this unit set up and establishing connections between my desktop and Inspiron 5150. Take it out of the box, connect an ethernet cable between the desktop and router and plug it in. Use your favourite browser to connect to 198.168.1.1 and run through the setup wizard. Then once you've got everything set up, read through the manual, go through the various setup options and tweak as desired. I opted to go with the WPA-PSK authentication protocol because its supposed to be more secure, but if you have other devices that don't support it, you'll probably have to stick with WEP.
It can be laid flat on the desk, or propped up on end vertically using the little rubber feet that are supplied. There are 4 ethernet ports that allow you to connect via 10/100 Ethernet and the WAN port to connect to cable, DSL or LAN. The antenna is on a swivel and can be rotated to just about any convenient orientation.
The only thing I don't like about the router is that it doesn't have an internal clock, so every time it is powered off the router's system time goes back to it's default start value. It can be configured to set the time from an NTP server, but only if it's connected to a WAN network (via DSL, cable or LAN). It's only a minor inconvenience though. The other thing is that the router's web interface only seems to work properly if you use IE. Using Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox sort of works for most things, but not everything.

The advanced wireless technology built into the DI-524 now offers up to 54Mbps through its wireless channels, allowing streaming videos and other high bandwidth applications, such as online gaming events to operate without the hassle of Ethernet cables. The ability to transfer high bandwidth also makes streaming real time programs more enjoyable and more efficient. Network Security is a precautionary threat and with the built-in advanced firewall, these threats are minimized, making it more difficult for hackers to penetrate through the DI-524. Features like content filtering, MAC filtering, URL blocking, and Domain blocking are useful tools to prevent other unwanted intruders to connect to your network.

New Accessories Moshi Classic Alarm Clock High Quality Practical Excellent Performance Review

New Accessories Moshi Classic Alarm Clock High Quality Practical Excellent Performance
Average Reviews:

I like the looks of this alarm clock and Voice Recognition is a cool technology, no doubt.
But the developers missed two major things:
- the clock not support 24 hour mode -- how difficult could that possibly be?? (very easy)
- the clock does now adjust time automatically as an atomic clock!
I think these are two MUST HAVE features! (I returned my Moshi) - a third thing to fix would be Celsius instead of Fahrenheit temp display (very easy to implement)I think the developers were pretty short-sighted. Had they built those features in, the clock would have been perfect, and they could have sold it world-wide.
Without those features, it's just a poorly implemented and overpriced clock.

I bought this card because it has FIVE external USB ports, it is PCI-E, and the price was very reasonable. The instructions are easy to follow and installed on first startup. NOTE: This card does require external power from a molex connector which are in most PCs. NOTE: Do not worry if you have used up all available molex power connectors in your PC because along with the card comes an adapter that splits one power source to two so you can connect the card along with whatever other device you have in your PC.

AT&T CallVantage Service VoIP Telephone Adapter Review

ATandT CallVantage Service VoIP Telephone Adapter

I ordered Callvantage service through the AT&T web site on a Monday and received the unit on Friday via FedEx. As part of my order I asked AT&T to port my current home phone number over to the Callvantage service. The port was completed 5 days after my adaptor was received. Once I received the adaptor I was able to activate the unit and service and make outgoing calls. You have to wait until your number is ported over before you can receive calls, until then you will receive your calls on your existing providers network. This whole process was very smooth.
Once I had the service up and running we noticed that there were some issues with the voice quality. Incoming voice was clear but our outgoing voice was dropping off from time to time and made having a conversation difficult. I called AT&T and they did some testing of my cable line and said everything looked ok. They suggested that it might be my cordless phone. I changed phones but still no luck. I ended up calling my cable provider and they came out and found two issues with my internet setup on their end which would cause dropped packets and lead to voice quality problems. Once they fixed this up we have had very good call quality from our AT&T service.
The lesson learned is that you have to deal with two providers and as usual both providers at first blammed the other provider for the issue.
On the positive side, I love being able to call long distance anytime of the day and not worry about charges or cellular minutes etc. AT&T has some nice features which I'm sure will get better over time. I like the call log and phone book feature as well as the locate me feature where you can have the service ring up to 5 phones to locate you if you are not home. Comes in handy if you need to be out of the house and are waiting for a call.
All in all I'm pretty happy with the service now that my issues are worked out. If there is one thing that will cause voip to not take off right away, it is the fact that there are more points of failure in having voip then with regular phone service. Your internet can go out, the voip gateway can lockup, your power can go out (unless you have a battery backup for the equipment). These are things that most people are not use to worrying about in regards to phone service. Also, since the unit only comes into one location, you have to have your home wiring adjusted for it to reach all your extensions or buy an expandable cordless system. This is an extra cost and extra effort that many people might not want to bother with.
If you are technically inclined then these issues might not be a big deal but if you are someone who struggles with PC's and internet basics then pass on voip until it becomes more standard and tested.

AT&T CallVantagesm Service from AT&T is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone service that utilizes the latest in Internet technology to deliver features that are beyond the means of traditional phone companies. With VoIP, calls are transmitted over the Internet, allowing you to communicate nationwide for a single monthly fee. You pay additional charges only for international calls, which are billed at competitive prices. (AT&T CallVantage Service treats calls to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada as domestic calls.) Plus, AT&T's Advanced Quality of Service (QoS) provides high voice quality.

AT&T CallVantage Service is easy to set up. To establish an account, just follow the instructions on the welcome letter, included in the box. Setting up the hardware is also very simple: just plug the telephone adapter into your existing phone and plug the other end into your cable or DSL modem. All DSL and cable modems with an Ethernet port and at least 90 Kbps upstream and downstream speed are supported, as well as both Windows computers and Macs.

In addition to the standard features you expect from your traditional phone company, like caller ID, call waiting, three-way calling, and call forwarding, AT&T CallVantage Service provides a number of features made possible only by use of Internet Protocol technology. You can have voice mail forwarded to your e-mail inbox as an attachment, and then forward that attachment to relevant third parties. You can take your home area code with you when you travel, so your family or work can reach you without paying long-distance rates. And, with an elaborate variation of call forwarding known as "Locate Me," you can maintain a list of places you'll be visiting; when you're out, AT&T CallVantage Service will ring them in sequence (or all at once) until it finds you.
Accessible either by phone or the Internet, the Phone Feature Manager provides access to a phone directory that can store up to 250 numbers, to call logs (incoming and outgoing for the last 60 days), and to many of your other phone settings. A reverse lookup feature lets you access the name and address information of an incoming caller, while the add-to-Phone Book feature lets you move any number from your call log to your Phone Book with the touch of a single button. A display-and-dial feature lets you easily call any number displayed in either your call log or Phone Book, and you can set up to nine speed dial entries. Taken together, that's a lot for a phone service to do. With all the features that AT&T's CallVantage Service makes possible, you can simplify and organize your communications like never before.
What's in the Box A telephone adapter for use with AT&T CallVantage Service, a 12-volt, 1-amp DC power adapter, a telephone line cord, an Ethernet cable, manuals, and service and promotional information
