I had to take the two mounting nuts off the connector to get it to work on my RS232 device. That was a pain and almost broke it, but after that I've been using it without any problems. Software is included to set up the device.

ETAIL ONLY BACK-UPS XS 1300VA Review

ETAIL ONLY BACK-UPS XS 1300VA
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this unit in September '09 from a local store. I am only writing a review here to warn others away from it.
I have RMA'd this unit 4 times now. Every time I get a new device, within 2 weeks - 2 months later it always starts exhibiting the same error which is an F08 Fan Failure.
I'm only ever using up to ~50% - 60% of the maximum wattage load, so it's not that I'm abusing the device. It always happens after several hours of intensive CPU usage on my machine (still only ever going up to 60% utilization).
When the unit receives an F08, it simply shuts itself off immediately, losing whatever data you happened to be working with. That's the entirety of the reason why you get a battery backup, so that instant cuts of power don't happen. Well, after this happening over and over, I've been continually RMA'ing the device over the course of the last 7 months.
I kept getting promised that "This device will work, we swear" from APC. Granted, the entire time I've had this problem, the support received from APC has been cordial, efficient, and minimal of a hassle. The only reason I continued RMAing this for so long is that I'm extremely busy and could not be bothered to do anything other than attempt to keep the status quo.
After the last failure, I requested another model device, because it's apparent to me that after receiving 4 of these units that it is a fault with the device itself. APC obliged and I am now getting a BX1500G in the mail shortly. I'd suggest to stay as far away from the BX1300G as you possibly can. Four units, from different manufacturing lots, all failing within 2 months of purchase with the same error. In addition, every unit I received that has failed had passed APC's "stringent QA process."
Spend a little more and go with a SmartUPS (much less problems), go with another company, or at the very least try the BX1500G (it's the same price now as this device was when I bought it). Be forewarned, however, that I have no experience with the BX1500G and it may still exhibit the same F08 errors that the BX1300G has.

Skylink AD-433S Emergency Dialer Review

Skylink AD-433S Emergency Dialer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this from the Home Security Store (a company to avoid if you appreciate quality customer service!) and it seemed to install and set up quite easily. I was surprised how easy it was to program. I wish it would take a longer outgoing message but it is limited. My suggestion is to just give your name and address and a SHORT message or you'll run out of time. It took me almost 10 times to record a message, and finally I had to WRITE my message and READ IT really fast. At first it would not dial when triggered. This was due to being hooked up inline with my cable modem and computer line. After several experiments I finally got it to work. What I had to do was hook up BOTH phone lines in the unit to a splitter! Otherwise it would not dial. I found it does work as it should. BUT, as with ALL SkyLink products I've purchase, I get DAILY false alarms!! I'm STILL trying to figure out the false alarm issue. Even with the motion sensors turned off I still get false alarms. But hey, it calls my cell phone when triggered. Only thing is how frustrating it is to drive all the way across town to check on my house only to find out it was yet another false alarm. Gee, I distinctly recall the old fable about the boy who cried wolf! After too many false alarms dialings, no friend or neighbor will ever respond if I'm out of town.
Not sure if I would recommend this or not. If I never had a false alarm dialing sent to my cell phone I would highly recommend it. But until I remedy the false alarm issue, I can only say it is worth the low price but not worth much more.
About the best thing about it is that it is triggered by ALL sensors and triggers used with other SkyLink alarms, AND the fact that it can be used alone or with the alarm on. So, you need not set the alarm unit for this dialer to work.

SMC SMC7004VBR Barricade Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100Mbps Switch Review

SMC SMC7004VBR Barricade Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100Mbps Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I bought this particular router I gave a fair consideration to equivalent products from other manufacturers. My objectives were as follows: a 4-port router with flexible parental controls and reliable firewall at a reasonable price. SMC7004VBR turned out to be a clear winner. Setup can be done in manual (advanced) or assisted (wizard) mode, via a browser interface. I used the advanced option but also verified the wizard afterwards, for completeness of this review. Worth noting is that the router reboots almost every time you click the "apply" button. This results in a temporary loss of communication (~30 sec) between the router and the computer, which may look a little disturbing. Additional note: if you decide to change the router's LAN address, it will reboot with the new IP so the browser needs to follow. All settings are fairly standard except for one: SMC decided to set firewall to OFF by default. So remember to go to the firewall settings and turn it ON manually (and click "apply"). A somewhat debatable approach, especially that there is no word about it in the User Guide. The parental controls are very good. This router is capable of blocking up to 30 user-defined web sites based either on the URL or a phrase included in the URL. A very important tool if you have young children at home. When one of them attempts to connect to a banned URL the router just hangs with no other indication so it looks like the remote site is simply not responding. Other routers that I am familiar with send a message back stating that the URL was blocked. I prefer SMC's gentle implementation. There are also settings for defining the Internet access time and day per computer. Other setting like port triggering, forwarding, DMZ etc are there. These are standard on all routers these days. The security features make this router really stand out. Unlike other models in this class, SMC7004VBR can identify several types of hacker attacks and send alerts to a predefined email address. SMC did an excellent job implementing full POP3 account settings. Other vendors provide only basic configuration (i.e. only SMTP server name, no password), which may cause alerts to get lost under certain circumstances (dynamic IP). I was a little disappointed to see that SMC does not give options for other email alerts (i.e. triggered by the URL filter) but hopefully they will consider it in future firmware releases. Software upgrade functionality works flowlessly. I upgraded my router after visiting SMC web site and realizing there was a newer version available. The support via their web site is sufficient, I really did not have any reasons to call them on the phone. In my configuration, this product functions not only as a firewall but it provides high-speed network connectivity between my home computers. A remote (near the ceiling) Wireless Access Point is connected to one of the ports. The bottom line: two thumbs up!

I received 1 cable for almost $10. The photo shows 5 cables. The description doesn't say "1 cable" anywhere. I have to buy more cables before I can use the router I purchased at the same time from Amazon.com. Between shipping problems and misleading photography, I don't believe I'll be purchasing anything but books from Amazon.com from now on. At least with books I know what I'm getting.

I was in need of a portable ethernet cord and this was exactly what I had in mind. The retraction was pretty good the first few times I used it but prolonged usage proved otherwise. The retraction gets stuck and doesn't rewind the cord all the way anymore. I would not repurchase this in the future mainly due to this fact.

Works great-- It doesn't have all the extra functions of the "dock" that came with the XL5, but it gives you a far less delicate way of connecting to your computer and keeping it charged-- all things most users will need anyway.
One minor drawback-- the end of the cable that actually plugs into the media player is itself an adapter to a more generic cable. This adapter "head" is something else that can come loose and be lost. I wish the cable was all one piece.

Electroline EDA FT08100 8-port TV Signal Booster/Amplifier with Active Return Path Review

Electroline EDA FT08100 8-port TV Signal Booster/Amplifier with Active Return Path
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this unit because I have two analog feeds and two QAM digital capture feeds (via an HDHR unit) that I use in conjunction with SageTV for recording television. I also have a cable modem so there's a couple splitters involved. I did purchase good passive splitters (Monster 2 and 3 ways), however the QAM signal quality levels and the modem performance were not ideal.
I got this model because of the cable modem support. Imagine my surprise when the first thing to pop out of the box is a note from the manufacturer that it's best to put your cable modem on it's own line off a splitter and not hook it up to this unit because some signal loss may occur. What the..?!?!? After ranting for a while and generally annoying my wife with my whining I hooked it up anyway and took some measurements. Fortunately their warnings are not necessary - they may want to think about rewording that little note a pinch.
Here's the hard numbers:
The QAM capture signal strength using a Monster 3 way split off the single line coming in my house (I have no up stream splitters - it's all centralized in closet) for the HD ABC feed had a strength of 88 and a signal quality of 92. Putting the one line as the feed into the 8 port amplifier and running the QAM ports off of it the strength jumped to 92 and the signal quality hovered around 94. Nice. Doesn't sound like a huge deal but for HD QAM captures it makes a difference.
I didn't notice any different before or after with the analog channels - I wasn't having a problem with those.
The cable modem was the item I worried about. Downstream from the splitters it was pretty bad - anything would be an improvement. With the outside cable plugged into the Motorola modem directly downstream signal to noise ratio was 38.6 dB (higher is better, anything over 30 and you're aces), the down stream power is .2 dBmV (fine) and the upstream power was 42 dB (anything less than 50 and you're fine). After running it through the 8 port amp the downstream noise ratio was 38.3, down stream power 1.7 and the upstream power stayed at 42. All dandy numbers. I checked the speeds at several sites before and after and they all averaged about 10 meg down and 1.5 meg up across the boards - virtually no difference. Just about exactly as good as a direct connection and much better than down stream from a passive splittler, even a good one.
So - short version I'm extremely happy with the purchase but I'd suggest to the fine folks at Electroline that they rethink their warning note in their box so as not to tick folks off too quickly for no reason.

Cisco-Linksys BEFN2PE EtherFast Cable/DSL Voice Enabler Review

Cisco-Linksys BEFN2PE EtherFast Cable/DSL Voice Enabler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At the time of this review, I just received and set up this product. Here's a quick summary of pros and cons:
Pros:
1. It's got the Linksys look-n-feel, if you know what I mean. Simple, sturdy packaging, stacks well with other Linksys peripherals (I also have their cable/dsl firewall, 10/100 auto switch, and wireless hub), decent instructions, configuration is transparent if you stick to the tried and true, the right set of diagnostic LEDs on the front panel.
2. The product set up was a snap with DHCP enabled. The only snag I ran into is that the ethernet port on the box is a crossover port by default (Ethernet, like many communications standards, has "hub" connections and "client" connections. Crossover connections let clients talk to clients or hubs talk to hubs...). Fixed easy enough by flipping the little "Am I a crossover port" toggle on the back and hitting the reset button (also on the back).
Cons (mostly net2phone):
1. You cannot use your existing net2phone account. There's a special account number assigned specifically for these devices.
2. The rates for these devices are higher than the other net2phone rates.
3. Don't expect to replace your regular telephone with this phone (as indicated in the manual). It does not support important features such as 411, 911, Caller ID, etc.
Recommendations:
1. This is probably the product to get if you want net2phone service but you have either (a) incompatible equipment, (b) are having a hard time getting your audio peripherals set up, (c) you want a cordless set up for use with net2phone (although there are solutions for this from Plantronic, e.g.).
2. Don't get it for cheaper phone service like I did.
Hope this helps!

I was having some issues with VOIP quality dropping if our PC's were in heavy use on the internet. So I picked up this device hoping to fix the issues, and sure enough, it worked!
Setup was PAINLESS beyond belief! I plugged it in, waited 3 mintues, and it was done, completely automatic exactly as described.. A 5 year old could hook this thing up!
In testing, it works perfect.. I saturated my internet connection with downloads and video streaming, then tried to make a VOIP call, and the call was crystal clear. This device squeezed down the other things, and allocated more space for the VOIP, and once the call completed, it increased back up the other items.

Phone Power Broadband Phone Service Review

Phone Power Broadband Phone Service
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I transferred my Vonage phone service to Phone Power. After about a month of service, I couldn't be happier. The call quality is great compared to Vonage and I no longer have audio problems which constantly plagued us where the audio would only work in one direction. We even tried switching the Vonage adapter and my cable modem and router without any success. Phone Power on the other hand worked immediately, my phone number was transferred on the day that they stated and is staffed and operated in the US, unlike Vonage which outsources tech support overseas.
Another great benefit is the free virtual 2nd line option which allows you to make and receive two calls at once with your primary phone number. The USB phone adapter for your computer is also very handy and you can plug a standard phone into it just like Magic Jack or use a headset and mic. Another little known fact is that you can get a soft phone which support will provide if you ask and you just install the software on your computer (does not require the USB adapter) that allows you to make and receive phone calls with your headset and mic.
Phone Power has a voice mail fax option as well which will send you a fax even if you don't have a physical fax machine and picks up during a voice mail if it hears a fax tone.
So far I highly recommend Phone Power, the service has been excellent and customer service great as well. I am on the two year plan for $199.00, not including taxes and haven't looked back at Vonage and don't miss it at all. Additional lines are reasonable also, unlike Vonage which charges the same price as your primary line.
