D-Link DI-704P 4-port 10BaseT/100BaseTX Broadband Gateway with Print Server Review

D-Link DI-704P 4-port 10BaseT/100BaseTX Broadband Gateway with Print Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a refurbished model for around [$$$] and everything was in perfect order. The old admin password had already been removed so there was no problem accessing configuration.
The D-Link DI-704P is very easy to hook up. I especially like the idea of having all the wiring in back and the LED's in front. As far as documentation; it is all included on the cd in pdf format. I suppose this keeps the cost down.
Getting things up and running took about half an hour, mostly because of one small undocumented glitch. It just would not connect. The problem was easily solved after reviewing the FAQ's on D-Link's web site. All I had to do was run winipcfg and release the current settings, then renew. After that just power down everything (computer, router, cablemodem). Then power the cablemodem back up and let it cycle through its procedures; power on the router; then the computer. All works perfect.
One of the main reason for choosing this unit was the print server feature. The software installed flawlessly, and reconfiguring my printer to direct it towards the D-Link print server was easy (HP DeskJet 420). Printing functions normally, so now my computer does not have to be on 24/7 to act as the print server.
I rate this product 5 stars for value and performance, but minus one star because the faq answer should have been included in the original documentation. So maybe a 4 1/2 star rating is more appropriate.

Efficient Networks 120-5871-002 Speedstream Business Class DSL Router Review

Efficient Networks 120-5871-002 Speedstream Business Class DSL Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although the vendor provided excellent shipping performance and support, it turned out that the router is not accessible and consequently not configurable. There is a reset button on the back of the router which will reset the IP address to factory default, for a period of about 10 minutes. However, the router password cannot be reset, and the method of using the serial number as password (as recommended on some internet support forums) did not work, so there is no way to configure the router. I did not try to access the router via Telnet and serial cable, as this requires a special cable for just this router, which was not supplied and cannot be purchased from Siemens. Siemens does not provide any kind of technical support for routers which are older than one year, they did not even bother to respond to an e-mail.
The vendor of the router has shipped, free of charge, two additional devices immediately after I have explained the access problems. But the problem is exactly the same with all of the routers, no access if you don't know the password!
So unless someone knows someone of the Siemens support team, you will not be able to use the device as a router. But if you are looking for a nice coffee cup warmer, go for it.

Netopia R910 Ethernet Router (4-port) Review

Netopia R910 Ethernet Router (4-port)
Average Reviews:

So for your small network you need a Router, 4port hub and occationally want to connect to it from on the road.
this is the box you want, It will do everything other routers do
plus it has a VPN SERVER that works with windows right out of
the box. It natively support PPTP, so you do not need additional software. Beware with other VPN server like linksys you WILL need a client software it you are using windows.
Negative: telnet administration, with more learning curve than
the web based interfaces you see with Linksys, etc.

SMC SMC7004ABR Barricade Cable/DSL router with 4-port 10/100Mbps switch and Integrated Print Server Review

SMC SMC7004ABR Barricade Cable/DSL router with 4-port 10/100Mbps switch and Integrated Print Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are several items that set this SOHO router apart from its peers:
1. Support:
SMC actually tries to solve problems with the product in an expeditions manner.
2. Flexibility:
The 7004ABR can be used with a serial modem, a serial ISDN TA, or any Ethernet-based broadband interface. It can also be configured to AUTOMATICALLY switch from the broadband interface to the serial interface if the broadband loses its connection, and automatically switch back when the broadband problem clears up.
The unit also includes a print server so PC/linux users can convert that old parallel-port printer into a network printer. I can't meaningfully comment on that feature, as I don't use it.
3. Security:
Stateful Packet Inspection, and logging of attack attempts. This unit _could_ be sold as a firewall, not just a SOHO router.
Unit can be configured to be totally stealthed on the WAN side. (good)
Client filtering can be used to selectively control internet access based on client IP, and date/time.
4. Convenience and Reliability:
Changing settings does _not_ require rebooting the router. This is a unique feature among SOHO routers that I have tried.
Only operation requiring router reboot is a firmware upgrade, which is, btw, extremely easy from any modern web browser.
As a result, it is easy to achieve just about 100% network uptime reliability with this product, even when making changes in the configuration. Very cool feature.
This unit is a class act, and at (dollar amount), an absolute steal.

SMC SMC7004VBR Barricade Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100Mbps Switch Review

SMC SMC7004VBR Barricade Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100Mbps Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I bought this particular router I gave a fair consideration to equivalent products from other manufacturers. My objectives were as follows: a 4-port router with flexible parental controls and reliable firewall at a reasonable price. SMC7004VBR turned out to be a clear winner. Setup can be done in manual (advanced) or assisted (wizard) mode, via a browser interface. I used the advanced option but also verified the wizard afterwards, for completeness of this review. Worth noting is that the router reboots almost every time you click the "apply" button. This results in a temporary loss of communication (~30 sec) between the router and the computer, which may look a little disturbing. Additional note: if you decide to change the router's LAN address, it will reboot with the new IP so the browser needs to follow. All settings are fairly standard except for one: SMC decided to set firewall to OFF by default. So remember to go to the firewall settings and turn it ON manually (and click "apply"). A somewhat debatable approach, especially that there is no word about it in the User Guide. The parental controls are very good. This router is capable of blocking up to 30 user-defined web sites based either on the URL or a phrase included in the URL. A very important tool if you have young children at home. When one of them attempts to connect to a banned URL the router just hangs with no other indication so it looks like the remote site is simply not responding. Other routers that I am familiar with send a message back stating that the URL was blocked. I prefer SMC's gentle implementation. There are also settings for defining the Internet access time and day per computer. Other setting like port triggering, forwarding, DMZ etc are there. These are standard on all routers these days. The security features make this router really stand out. Unlike other models in this class, SMC7004VBR can identify several types of hacker attacks and send alerts to a predefined email address. SMC did an excellent job implementing full POP3 account settings. Other vendors provide only basic configuration (i.e. only SMTP server name, no password), which may cause alerts to get lost under certain circumstances (dynamic IP). I was a little disappointed to see that SMC does not give options for other email alerts (i.e. triggered by the URL filter) but hopefully they will consider it in future firmware releases. Software upgrade functionality works flowlessly. I upgraded my router after visiting SMC web site and realizing there was a newer version available. The support via their web site is sufficient, I really did not have any reasons to call them on the phone. In my configuration, this product functions not only as a firewall but it provides high-speed network connectivity between my home computers. A remote (near the ceiling) Wireless Access Point is connected to one of the ports. The bottom line: two thumbs up!

D-Link DI-701 Ishare Cable/DSL Internet Sharing Router Review

D-Link DI-701 Ishare Cable/DSL Internet Sharing Router
Average Reviews:

I bought the first DI 701 for testing on my office LAN, and had it up and running in 10 minutes. I was so impressed with it, that I bought one for home, then three more for remote sites.
It works very well with all applications, is very fast, and is extremely secure vs. a basic software firewall. I have done extensive testing, and I was unable to gain access to a LAN secured with this product, using multiple security auditing tools (Network security is my speciality).

I originally purchased a Linksys DSL/Cable router because of a clerk's recommendation. It never worked even after I took it back and got a replacement. I then purchased a Netgear ProSafe router which sort of worked with the BellSouth DSL modem but still had all sorts of packet losses. I went back to the store and purchased the Belkin Cable/DSL router and it worked flawlessly right out of the box! I ran the set-up cd-rom, attached the cables, and I was on-line in 3 minutes. I then hooked in my wife's computer and laptop and they too worked after booting. If you have BellSouth DSL or any other "finicky" ISP, this router is the one to get, it saved the day!!

Cisco-Linksys BEFSR81 Cable/dsl Router with 8-PT Switch Review

Cisco-Linksys BEFSR81 Cable/dsl Router with 8-PT Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Due to the increasing size of my home network, I decided toupgrade to the 8 port BEFSR81 from the 4 port BEFSR41. The two areidentical in size. A Cable/DSL router is a MUST HAVE for those whowish to share a broadband connection. 99 percent of DSL providersutilize what is known as Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet(PPoE). This works just like a normal dial up connection where youhave a username and a password. Normally, this PPoE is done viasoftware installed on your computer. This has many limitations. First, the host computer must always be on for others to utilze aconnection. In that sense, each computer is not independent of theother.
The Linksys has PPoE software built into it. Each computerplugged into the unit can access the internet independently of eachother. Better yet, you never have to see a username/password screenwhen connecting to the internet.
In addition to allowing one toshare a connection, the Linksys also acts as a hardward firewallpreventing hackers from accessing your computers. A must have! Youcannot be secure enough these days!
The unit is easy enough to useNovice to expert. While they're are many advanced features, it is notimperative to set or configure them. The html based interface of theunit is extremely intuitive and easy to figure out. The unit itselfleaves a very small footprint.
The linksys supports DMZ which isknown as a demilitarized zone. It basically allows one local user tobe exposed to outsiders. It is used for such tasks asvideoconferencing and internet gaming where constant two waycommunication is essential. In addition Quality of Service (QoS) isonly offered on this 8 port model. It allows you to prioritizeinternet tasks such as http, ftp, telnet, etc.... Not really thatimportant unless you have many users on at once.
Many cable modemproviders utilize a system where they "lock" your cablemodem service to either 1 modem, or 1 network card. This is to preventyou from sharing or using your connection with other suchcomputers. They're is a hardware number encoded onto your network cardand modem. This is known as a "MAC" address. To circumventthis, the Linksys cable/DSL router has a box where you enter in theMAC address of the item that the cable modem service is locked to andit will emulate it. Very clever and works very well!.
One thing theLinksys cannot help you with is running cables throughout your houseto different rooms! Right now I have managed to run ethernet cablesthrough 5 different areas of the house. I have networked our homeLaser printer (HP LaserJet 2100TN)and have added a WirelessLAN setupso now with a laptop I can surf via wireless broadband!

Actiontec GT724R Universally Compatible 4-port ADSL Gateway (Gray) Review

Actiontec GT724R Universally Compatible 4-port ADSL Gateway (Gray)

bought this one to replace Westell DSL modem (used 6 years), along with netgear wired router
setup is easy, it comes with Verizon DSL settings, choose it, and get online in 10 minutes
the unit runs cool, and doesn't use up much power like 2 units
internet is a bit faster than previous units
there's some reason I don't give 5 stars:
1. it doesn't support dynamic DDNS (dyndns, no-ip), to make it work, you must have a dedicated computer to have it running
2. kinda buggy port forwarding setup (unable to remove it if you make mistake, requires factory reset
3. no setting backup/restore options: that you have to start all over after fw upgrade or factory reset
4. site blocking doesn't have "all computers" option, that I have to setup blocking on individual computers, big hassle! (I have to put in same setting on 6 computers!!! and I have nearly 100 sites to be blocked)
update: it doesn't work with slingbox streaming over internet (firewall issue), you must purchase a separate router (wired or wireless), go to advanced, set DSL mode to RPC bridging mode, use any LAN port to router's WAN port, and setup PPPoE in the router
after that, internet streaming works like charm

TRENDnet 4-Port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA (Blue) Review

TRENDnet 4-Port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA (Blue)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Trendnet to replace an old Netgear router, which was still working fine, except it couldn't keep Outlook connected to its remote Exchange server. I suspected that the old router was too slow to handle the RPC over http (Exchange Proxy) connection that Outlook uses, but I wasn't sure. So I was looking for a new and ultra-low-cost router to see if it would fix the problem. This router solved the problem immediately - in fact Outlook connects faster from home now than it does at the office.
This router was easy to install and set up. At first I was reluctant to switch brands because I was already familiar with configuring Netgear routers (I also have a Netgear wireless router configured as an access point.) But I didn't have any trouble navigating the admin screens for the Trendnet. I connected my Netgear wireless router to one port of the Trendnet as a wireless access point and it works perfectly.
(Why two routers? My home office with its several computers is located at a corner of the house - a poor location for the wireless router. So the Trendnet router stays in the office. A cable runs from the Trendnet to a centrally located closet, where the Netgear wireless router lives. Some special configuration of the routers is required for this setup - it's explained on the Netgear web site.)
My only complaint about the Trendnet is the red flashing status light. According to the documentation that came with my router this light was supposed to be green, so I was trying to figure out what problem was causing it to flash red. Eventually I discovered that "OK" is now flashing red, not green. Personally I'd prefer a green light for OK - the flashing red can be distracting.
I hope that this router will prove as reliable as my Netgear routers have been.

Cisco-Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch Review

Cisco-Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch
Average Reviews:

We have a PC upstairs, which is our primary computer, and a Mac downstairs in the tv room. I wanted both to be able to share our broadband Internet service. I looked at several routers, both wired and wireless. It came down to the Linksys (wired version) and SMC Barricade Wireless. I kept coming back to Linksys because a friend owns one and raves about it.
Besides the fact that it looks really cool, it almost took me longer to get it out of the box than it did to set it up. No kidding! Using the QuickStart guide, I was up and running in less than ten minutes. You hook up the necessary cables, restart your computer, log-in to the Linksys website to configure your router, restart your computer again, and you're good to go.
I wasn't as optimistic about setting up my Power Mac G3. However, I was pleasantly surprised and it took me all of about five minutes before I was doing some high-speed surfing on that machine as well. Fortunately, my Mac has an Ethernet port so it was just a matter of attaching the CAT-5 cable from there to the Linksys and setting the TCP/IP control panel to the Ethernet and DHCP options. I saved my configuration, opened up my browser and spent the next two hours high-speed surfing with no problems.
I have no problem recommending the Linksys, especially for its ease of setup on a PC and Mac network. While I would have preferred a wireless setup, they've received mixed reviews and I was concerned about Mac compatibility. After seeing how well my Mac performs with this Linksys, I'm ready to make ours a wired household!

The Linksys EtherFast cable/DSL router connects multiple PCs to a high-speed broadband Internet connection or to an Ethernet backbone. Configurable as a DHCP server, the EtherFast router acts as the only externally recognized Internet device on your local area network (LAN). The router can also be configured to block internal users' access to the Internet. A typical router relies on a hub or a switch to share its Internet connection, but the Linksys EtherFast router channels this connection through the full-duplex speed of its built-in EtherFast 10/100 four-port switch. This combination of router and switch technology eliminates the need to buy an additional hub or switch and serves your network as a completely dedicated, full-duplex backbone. Now your entire network can enjoy broadband Internet connections supported by its switched backbone. This unit requires an external cable or DSL modem with an Ethernet RJ-45 interface.
