This router was so easy to install, it was scary! After years of living in "Linksys hell" with their "b" router, version 2, I decided to take a chance on a new, highly-rated router. Out of the box, I had the Belkin installed and working immediately in 10 minutes or less!! I'm just an average user, but I highly recommend this router to anyone who is thinking of switching to wireless networking in their home. Well worth the money to upgrade.

NETGEAR 3G Mobile Broadband Router (Black) Review

This replaces an older Netgear wireless router at my house. The setup was easy and worked the first try. It identified and connected to my Verizon usb727 mobile broadband card without problem. Now all my equipment has internet access.
Note that the included usb cable seems to be required for the broadband card to work. Plugging the card directly into the router powered the card, but the router reported that no usb device was plugged in.

I purchased this item after recently purchasing the Alfa, also offered by this seller on Amazon. (USB 500mW WiFI Adapter for Wardriving & Range Extension *Strongest on the Market* $51.99)
I liked the Alfa but this one had a bigger antenna and was cheaper and looked almost identical to my Alfa so I decided to give it a try. I'm not loving it. The setup was much more difficult and I couldn't get it working on my desktop running XP at all. The Alfa plugged right in and runs like a dream on it. Also, I actually get worse reception with the big antenna than I do with the small one.
All and all, I would recommend the Alfa over this one for ease of installation (installed on XP with no additional work and installed on Vista with driver from website pretty easily). Also the Alfa seems to more consistently maintain the signal and I got more bars with it then I am getting with this GSky.
Spend the extra few dollars and go with the Alfa. (By the way, I am a SAH mom, not a computer geek, so keep that in mind when I talk of ease of install and setup.)

Virgin Mobile Wireless Network Router MiFi 2200 Review

Virgin Mobile Wireless Network Router MiFi 2200
Average Reviews:

Everywhere that we have used our Virgin Mobile Mifi, it has worked great. $40 a month unlimited internet with no contract, and the ability to only pay for it the months you use it, is the best deal out there. I highly recommend this device.
One note that you might not be aware of. None of the Mifi 2200's (for any carrier) can be used while they are connected to a computer's USB. The data connection to the computer shuts the Wifi off. There are three solutions. 1) If you use the Mifi on battery this isn't an issue (obviously) 2) If you use the Mifi plugged into a wall or car charger, with no data connection to a computer, this isn't an issue. 3) If you buy a "Power-Only", no data, USB cable, or modify your USB cable to remove the data connection, you can power it off your computer and still use the Wifi.

I am retired and I don't mind saying that I enjoy an afternoon nap now and again. I always have to fumble with the phone cord at the bottom of my phone in my bedroom if I want to be sure it will not wake me in the middle of my afternoon nap.
Until now, that was the only alternative. My friend has one of these switches and told me about how easy it was to install and how convenient it is to just flip the switch to turn her phone on and off with the TRICK. Now I have one and I must say that I totally enjoy the convenience of being able to cut off the phone whenever I want. I have my privacy again and I will recommend it to anyone who needs the same solution to the problem of those unwanted phone calls at the wrong time. What a blessing. I think I'll give some for Christmas gifts.

I've used this product for the past two years in Sierra Leone and other parts of West Africa. Since there is virtually no electricity in Sierra Leone, power is produced by generators which are notoriously unstable: several laptops and other pieces of equipment in my office were ruined by surges, including one laptop whose power box actually blew up (sending pieces to all four corners of the room!) and a printer that spewed sparks during the surge. With the CyberPower, my laptop never had a problem!

I purchased this to connect a Dell PDA to a Raven GPS system. It works very well for this combination. I have also purchased a "non-ruggedized version," and I wouldn't recommend it unless absolutely necessary. It is little more flimsy in the connection between the cable and the CF card, and extra care needs to be taken when handling the "non-ruggedized" version. Overall, I am very pleased with this product.

I have being using this model since 2006. Although there have being many new technology updates since then, to me, what most important factors are still down to the range, trouble free usage, and the ease of setup. For these, this Asus WL-520GC performs extremely well.
Range: I am able to place the base unit on the first floor while got the decent signal at the third floor. The workable range seems even better than my friend's newer Asus N router.
Free from trouble: I have never had a need to restart the router as what I occasionally needed to do so on other brands' routers. To me, this is the only router that I feel 100% safe while I need to use it remotely.
Easy installation: I am an experienced PC user but is a network moron. By using the installation disc, I was able to do the setup with a breeze.
In the past few years, I totally bought about 8-10 of this model and gave them to my relatives. None of them had experienced any dissatisfaction or have ever had the need to upgrade. (Note: It has no N mode)
I highly recommend this model to anyone who need a simple, trouble free, and robust wireless router.

This is the absolute worst product I ever bought. I bought it explicitly for the VPN accessibility. I never got that to work. If you have to forward a port..make sure you know what you're doing cause once you choose the port, you can't go back and change it.
Also, which was rather nice (sarcastic)....the people in support were able to establish a vpn connection to my router but I couldn't. I used 3 different machines with the trial software they recommend. Their solution was that instead of using the trial software..BUY their product and then try it.
I never write reviews but I don't want anyone getting screwed with this thing.

Cisco-Linksys WET200 Wireless-G Business Ethernet Bridge Review

Cisco-Linksys WET200 Wireless-G Business Ethernet Bridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent wireless bridge. I have it communicating with a Linksys WAP54G running WPA2-PSK to connect an "island" of wired computers to my main network wirelessly. The WET200 includes 5 10/100 ports, so you can connect several computers, a printer, etc. to your network.
The WET200 passes NETBIOS traffic, so Windows file and print sharing work fine. The WET200 also passes DHCP traffic, so you don't have to assign static IP addresses to the devices you plug in. This is especially handy for me because I sometimes have guests who bring their laptops, but those laptops cannot get onto my wireless network (usually because they don't support WPA2). With the WET200, they can just plug in to an unused port and they are instantly on the network.
The bridge features are quite advanced -- more than I need. It is a real learning bridge, not a dumb repeater. It supports VLANs, QoS, Spanning Tree protocol, etc. The good news is you don't have to worry about any of this if you don't need the advanced features. The WET200 comes configured from the factory with sensible defaults.
Setup and installation was a breeze. I followed the quick set-up instructions and was up and running within a few minutes.
At this price point, the WET200 is a steal.

Buffalo Technology AirStation N150 Wireless Router & AP WCR-GN (White) Review

Buffalo Technology AirStation N150 Wireless Router and AP WCR-GN (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using a powerline adapter to get ethernet to my slingbox and other A/V equipment, but powerline is very sensitive to anything and everything. So I started looking for an affordable wireless bridge. Here it is in the WCR-GN.
To be clear (since the packaging is not) this unit can be used as a standard access point and firewall, or as a bridge to connect to your existing wireless network and give you five ethernet ports in a remote location--a wireless switch. The box leaves you wondering if this unit is compatible with other brands of access points--it is.
I got the unit, plugged it in and configured it for bridging mode, and it connected to my D-Link DIR-625 wireless network with no problems (using 802.11n). It brings me much better and consistent throughput to my A/V equipment than did my four port powerline unit. In bridging mode the "WAN" ethernet port becomes a fifth switch port.
The web management interface is quirky and unrefined, but it gets the job done. When you make changes that cause the unit to reset, the screen usually says it will take about 20s. It really takes 1-2 minutes to settle down and stabilize, so don't get too impatient. The radio seems to have a more limited range than most, but it's acceptable for my purposes. It is a rather small unit, so can fit just about anywhere.
This unit can also act as a simple access point with a no-frills firewall, but I don't intend to use it that way and haven't tested it. What I did test was streaming my slingbox to my desktop while simultaneously watching an HD YouTube video streaming to my BluRay player. Both were running through the Buffalo in opposite directions. Pretty basic stuff, but I had to make sure it performed given the price. Neither had a hiccup, which is again far better than my old setup.
Lastly, in bridging mode it can also act as a wireless repeater to extend your existing wireless signal, or to add more SSIDs. I don't have a need for this and only tested it briefly.

Smart Strip SCG5 Energy Saving Power Strip with Autoswitching Technology and Coaxial Surge Protection Review

Smart Strip SCG5 Energy Saving Power Strip with Autoswitching Technology and Coaxial Surge Protection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Smart Strip SCG5 Energy Saving Power Strip with Autoswitching Technology and Coaxial Surge Protection has a lot of claims built-in to the product description. Can it deliver on all of them? Well the short answer is *mostly yes*. It does work for those claims that I could test, but not all claims could be tested right away. As with all power and electrical equipment there is some chance of device failure so you have to make sure to clearly read the instructions and follow them carefully. But in a nutshell, here's my take on the claims.
1. Is it energy saving? Well, this was the hardest claim for me to truly verify strangely enough. It's easy to attach this to a usage monitor like the P3 International P4400 Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor but few people have those on hand. Luckily I do have one, but my test was still inconclusive when I compared this against a regular inexpensive power strip that had been completely shut off. So from a power saving point of view, both options seemed to work similarly while still drawing some small amount of power.
2. Does the autoswitching work? The more involved question of whether the automatically switched outlets work to cut power use is somewhat easier to test. The answer is still not totally satisfying, and is more like a *maybe*. Let me explain. If you are lucky, as I was, and you find that this unit works for your devices without adjustment, you will see them turn on and off based upon the control outlet device. For more confirmation, using a simple voltage meter like the Equus 3320 Auto-Ranging Digital Multimeter will allow you to see what each of the switched outlets are drawing in terms of power.
That makes this ideal for use with your TV entertainment center. This is an inherently simpler application than computer use because the types of devices in an entertainment center (DVD player, video game consoles like XBOX360, Wii, and PS3, AV Receiver) all draw a similarly larger amount of power. However, for computer applications with printers and speakers, your peripherals may all draw different amounts of power. The results is that you will have to likely do more adjustment with computer set-ups.
3. Does the coaxial surge protection work? Well the quality of the coax connectors is actually quite good. They are gold plated, and an extra cable is included that also has gold plated connectors. This is also somewhat difficult to test, but unluckily for me I have to deal with a lot of surge events on my coaxial line and feel very comfortable leaning towards confidence in this feature so far. I've had several tuners burned out due to frequent coax surges. I tested this for a few days with a tuner that I knew was near the end, and I can report that it seemed to function as advertised. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement but it leads me to the next, and probably most important point.
4. Does this thing work as a surge protector on the outlets? It's a well known secret that most cheap power strips offer no surge protection worth depending on. I could not duplicate or predict the frequency of surges in order to know this for certain. But the instructions include some specific and involved ratings that are based on UL (Underwriters Laboratory) specification 1449 ver 2 rating (330 V, 48K Amp 3 way protection). That is a pretty good rating for a device this size and if it's not accurate I will know within a very short period of time and update this review. Now while I'm not going to rehash all of the instructions here, there are a few factoids which should be useful for those who are planning on using this.
1. This strip is larger and fatter than your average power strip. The plug is a fully grounded off-set three prong plug that must be seated in a truly grounded outlet to work. This cannot be plugged into a different power strip or extension cable. It's not uncommon for older homes or apartment buildings to have grounding issues. Make sure you have up to date grounded electrical outlets in your intended space. If you don't get a green *OK* light when this is plugged in, you may have an issue with your outlet or potentially a dud.
2. The adjustment knob can be turned with a screw driver and is only meant to be adjusted a half turn in each direction for one full turning radius. Follow the instructions. First you have to adjust it to make sure all the switched devices go on and then adjust it to make sure they all turn off. You should not be turning this thing in circles. If you can't get all your devices to switch on and off, you may not be using this for the right devices or you may need a replacement device.
3. Which brings me to my next point. It's kind of a repeat point but it should be emphasized. I get the impression this strip is ideal for large power consumption devices like home entertainment equipment, video game consoles, DVD/BluRay players, etc. Those who are mixing power hungry printers with small speakers will have to do more adjustment to get it to work with all of them at the same time. That's probably the main reason some people have had problems.
Truthfully, the manufacturer is sort of to blame by trying to make it seem like it's easy to get this to work with all devices. It isn't. The instruction manual outlines uses such as 40 watt bulbs and medium or large shop equipment. To me that implies that putting high power-drawing equipment along with low-power drawing equipment is probably the source of some problems.
4. This is rated at 15 Amps of power, which is more than enough for 7 outlets of normal use but not enough to run all of your home appliances off of. While most people would not push those limits, make sure you have a sanity check on what you are installing on this device. Seven electric refrigerators are likely to be above the power rating for this or any such electrical device.
5. If you are using this with a computer, sleep mode is not considered *off* but is rather a low-power state. If you want your power saving features to turn *off* all your switched peripherals, you have to set your computer for Hibernate mode or literally shut it off. This is another reason why it's simpler to use this with a home entertainment center. When a TV is off, it's off. With all the power saving settings for laptops and computers, they may be convenient but they can be confusing too.
I know this is a lot to swallow. I hope this helps people planning on setting up these strips. I would strongly recommend this as a choice for home entertainment centers. For computers, an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) along with a surge protector is probably a better solution.
I will definitely be keeping an eye on my unit to make sure I have no device failure due to surge or other reason. Make sure you test yours to make sure it's OK when you get it.
Enjoy.

NETGEAR FVG318 ProSafe 802.11G Wireless VPN Firewall 8 Review

NETGEAR FVG318 ProSafe 802.11G Wireless VPN Firewall 8
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I too had a poor experience with this device. There are a LOT of updates and fixes available for the problems described by the other reviewer, but unfortunately they are only available for the "V2" device. Amazon shares part of the blame for the problem since I ordered my device WELL after the V2 released but Amazon sent me one of the "old stock" V1 devices.
After performing all possible V1 updates, tuning, tweaks, etc. I was ready to return the device. I decided that I would give the V2 firmware a try (yes, it may void your warranty, but if the device is an absolute piece of trash anyway...)
The "good news" is that the V2 firmware loaded just fine and performs "as advertised" - just no warranty. DDNS actually works for me with the V2 firmware, and all my VPN tunnels also all work without any issues. My device is used in a light business / heavy home user environment with 5 persistent VPN tunnels and I have not noticed any performance related issues, random resets, or dropped connections after the V2 flash upgrade.
Shame on Netgear for not offering an upgrade path from V1 to V2 (partial credit or something).
Shame on Netgear for not supporting the V2 software on the V1 device (since the V2 software is the only thing that makes the device usable).
Shame on Amazon for not returning all their old stock to Netgear and offering their customers the latest version of the product - my main complaint here is that if I purchase a book that has multiple revisions, at least I am told, and therfore able to select which revision of the book I would like to purchase. This was not the case with my purchase of the firewall.

Bought as a replacement for original that got lost. I separate adapter tip on this, gives you the ability to replace just the USB portion of the cable if it should get damaged. Have not used to download yet, but plays through car stereo just fine and charges. Wish the coiled cable were a bit longer, just and inch or so to reach the center console in the front seat of my vehicle a bit easier. Would not recommend allowing it to just hang, as this will damage the cable over time.
